Photographer to Watch: Kari Herer

I came across the work of Portland, ME-based photographer Kari Herer on Etsy and was absolutely swept off my feet. She does commercial, portrait, and fine art work, but it's her floral photography that really gets me.

Fresh peonies and hydrangea make wonderful subjects for anyone behind the camera, but take a look at Herer's work and you'll be convinced she's truly a stylist at heart. Here, she's arranged and captured a delicate magnolia on a gorgeous botanical illustration - buy an eight-by-10 print here for $25. In Peony No. 9364, flower buds prove to have strength in numbers in her well-composed arrangment. A pinecone in a teacup? Unusual, but ethereal. Herer's composition is flawless and she almost gives her subjects a vintage feel, which I adore. See more of her work when you read more.

Photographer to Watch: Emma Lee

Photographer Emma Lee's passion for life is obvious in her photographs. Evidence of human life is everywhere, from glasses left beside unmade beds to glasses of wine left on a worn stool. Emma, who also photographs food, tends to blur the boundaries between her shoots, making her interior shots even more lush with their use of food and drink. Imbibing in a gallery of her photos might leave you a bit drunk on the vibrant imagery, but no worries: the effect may be intoxicating, but it won't hinder your good judgment. Sydney-based photographer Roger D'Souza shoots interiors, exteriors, and portraits all with equal skill and expert composition. Many of his photos happen to feature stunning architecture, though D'Souza highlights the gorgeous buildings with his expert use of natural light. Photographer to Watch: Aaron Chang

Surfer, world traveler, and photographer Aaron Chang expresses his passion for the outdoor world through his massive, beautifully rendered photographs. Aaron, who has just opened his first gallery in Solana Beach, CA, works in large-format photographic prints that highlight his love for travel and the ocean. An award-winning photographer with over 100 magazine covers to his credit, Aaron is currently working with renowned designer David Carson on his first book, which should be out this December. I recently had the opportunity to interview Aaron about his work, life, and commitment to the environment.

CasaSugar: Did surfing affect your desire to start taking photographs, or was it the other way around?

Aaron Chang: Yes, surfing was the reason I started taking photographs. I saw so much beauty when I was surfing that I was motivated to shoot in order to share what I was seeing with people.

CasaSugar: What is your favorite subject to photograph?

Aaron Chang: The ocean. Waves in particular.

CasaSugar: I see that you're involved with Surfrider Foundation. Can you tell readers a little about this charity?

Aaron Chang: I have a passion for the ocean, so my partnering with Surfrider was an obvious fit. We will be partnering with Surfrider for the gallery's grand opening on Feb. 28. A portion of the evening's sales will be donated to them. We will also be working with them on an ongoing basis for future events.

CasaSugar: I love that you use eco-friendly materials. How and why did you begin doing this?

Aaron Chang: I feel it is important to be responsible with the earth's finite resources. Every little bit helps. [Aaron uses material such as recycled scrap metal and earth-friendly dyes.]

CasaSugar: Why did you decide to present your photographs in such a large format?

Aaron Chang: Big is exciting! The new digital process can replicate 68 billion colors with laser precision, allowing us to make prints that were not technologically possible a few years ago. These prints have startling resolution and color at sizes that create lifelike experience for the viewer.

Photographer to Watch: Polly Wreford

I just came across the beautiful work of London-based photographer Polly Wreford, and I'm completely spellbound. Her images are overflowing with gorgeous light and soft colors. She shoots lifestyle, interiors, and still life, but it just so happens that every room in her portfolio is more stunning than the next, not to mention completely inspiring for a deco-phile like me. Her work has appeared in many magazines and publications, including Homes & Gardens and Red, and in several books published by Ryland Peters & Small (UK publisher of Bazaar Style), including Simple Chic Flowers, The Wedding Planner, The Relaxed Home, At Home With White and Gifts for Baby. Photographer to Watch: Rachel Whiting

London-based photographer Rachel Whiting graduated from Brighton University in 2001 and has since been shooting interiors and still-life professionally, and landscapes personally. Her long list of clients includes a wealth of popular publications, such as Brides, House Beautiful, Eve, Frieze, Coast, and Architects Journal. What strikes me most about her work is how she flawlessly captures color. She brings a warmth to her images by revealing the tiniest tonal variations, be it in a colorful bedspread or a stack of white linens. Beyond that, she manages to make even cluttered spaces look simple and neat - a power we'd surely all kill for. To see some more photos of her work, read more.

Photographer to Watch: Brent Stirton

Remember this cover? Well, it turns out the photographer who (off-the-record) shot Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's twins, resulting in one of People's highest-selling issues ever, and who also shot the first images of Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, captures more than celebrity babies. Brent Stirton is an accomplished photojournalist and a senior staff photographer for the assignment division of stock photography company Getty Images, New York. Just last week, Stirton won a highly coveted award, the 2008 Visa d'Or Award for Feature Photography, for his series on the slaughter of gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which pales in comparison to the wealth of other awards he has received. His photojournalism work is heartwrenchingly beautiful, sometimes haunting, horrifying, and perhaps NSFW. At the same time, the images are quite important to see, as he brings to light crucial topics like sustainability, the environment, HIV, and an array of devastating political issues. Stirton's work has been published by National Geographic Magazine, National Geographic Adventure, The Discovery Channel, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, The London Sunday Times Magazine, Le Express, Le Monde 2, GQ, Geo, Stern, CNN. Stirton travels an average of 10 months of the year on assignment, and actually also writes a blog for the Discovery Channel which regularly features pictures and stories from his travels.

Stirton's celebrity shoots are actually done anonymously and credited only to Getty Images, and Getty Images has only credited him on the record for the 2006 Jolie-Pitt baby shoot, not the 2008 shoot. In an interview with Photo District News, when asked whether he shot the 2008 photos, Stirton dodged the bullet with a "no comment." But he alluded that the answer was yes, and went on to say that he knows Angelina from his work in Sierra Leone, and that she gave him an award for his AIDS work.

Photographer to Watch: William Wright

Seattle-based photographer William Wright contributed the lush shots in the book Stylish Sheds and Elegant Hideaways, which documented secondary living spaces around the US. Wright's talents extend far beyond the backyard, though. A commercial photographer since 1984, Wright specializes in architectural and garden photography, and has been commissioned for projects by architects, authors, and interior designers. He has a talent for capturing tiny, compelling details in a room, while also bringing out the best in exterior home shots. Take a look at the gallery for some of my favorite shots from Wright.

Photographer to Watch: David Duncan Livingston

Photographer David Duncan Livingston shoots interior and exterior spaces, portraits, fine art, and still lifes, and also has experience location scouting and styling, among other things. His impressive list of clients includes Kohler, Hilton Hotels, Barnes & Noble, Starwood Hotels, Kitchenaid, Chronicle Books, and Taunton Press. His portfolio is a pleasure to flip through. Livingston seems to use a lot of natural light, which is refreshing. Although many of the interiors he shoots seem very formal, the styling gives them a bit of a casual quality — a chair turned away from the table just so, a door left slightly ajar, or a glass of water left by a bedside.
