Sugar Editorial Picks

I've seen pendant lamp shades made from sugar and flour canisters, as well as corrugated cardboard, plastic tupperware containers, and measuring tape rolls, among with many other alternative materials. Though the look of retro food storage containers may not jive with the aesthetic of my home, it never ceases to inspire me, and I always look forward to seeing more of its kind. In the case of these Russell Johnson Vintage Seltzer Pendant Lamps ($395), which are cut from 1930s Argentine seltzer bottles, I'm once again impressed with a clever re-purposing of an old item.

Flipping through my vast magazine collection, I recently reread the March issue of InStyle. This issue featured the home of celeb socialite Nicky Hilton, and while I did find it quite chic (though fussy at times) for a 20-something, it wasn't the sophisticated interior design style that struck me. In the master bedroom, which she calls, "classic but naughty [ .

The Bodo Sperlein Teardrop Pendant Lighting ($5,500) is made of handblown glass and bone china flowers. It is pretty gorgeous, though I'd be too afraid of breaking it to enjoy it fully. How about you?

Recently, I showed you lights made from Tupperware, and apparently great minds think alike, because AT:SF also posted photos of these kitchen lights, made from vintage canisters. I love the diffused light from the punched holes, and the silvery sheen of these storage containers. What other kitchen objects would make great lampshades or pendants?

Seattle-based design collaborative Graypants designed Scrap Lights (inquire for price), a series of pendant lights made from salvaged pieces of corrugated cardboard. I love how the reused cardboard's grooves and folds reflect dreamy, cloud-like patterns on the wall. The truth is, these days it's not hard to find beautiful furnishings made of reused or sustainable materials; however, Scrap Lights' design makes use of corrugated cardboard's unique structure, which is really appealing to me.

Faux bois may be a fading trend, but vrai bois (real wood) is not likely to ever lose its edge. That's especially true when it comes to handsome designs like the Crate & Barrel Dane Pendant Lamp ($64.95, reduced from $129). Made of a beautifully grained Brazilian sandalwood veneer shade, it will make a dapper focal point above your kitchen island or dining table.

The XL Hangbol Pendant ($595) is handcrafted from aluminum with a delicate patterning. I like how it blends industrial materials with a more Morocccan sensibility. How about you?

The Chihiro Tanaka Lamp ($180) looks like a puffy cloud floating in your room. I think they look lovely when grouped together, but I also can see how their amorphous shapes can be a little off putting.

Artist Chrissy Angliker makes her Measuring Lamps by spiraling measuring tape into a cone shape. The positioning of the centimeter and inch ticks and the colors of the tape vary, so the pattern on each lamp is unique. While they'd certainly be appropriate for a craft room or workshop, I think the graphic quality of the ticking would be an eye-catcher in any space.
