Roundup: Chevron's Goin' On

I spotted this Black Zigzag Lamp ($185) at Emilia Ceramics, a San Francisco-based ceramic import shop, and felt a revived love for chevron patterns. The contemporary lamp is handmade by Mexican pottery studio Talavera Vázquez in the city of Dolores Hidalgo. I've been drooling over Madeline Weinrib's cotton flatweave zigzag rug ever since I saw it, but aside from that, I've never felt much affinity for chevron/zigzag patterns. I thought I'd see what else is out there. So, check out my chevron finds.

In my own bathroom, I'm a white tile, white towel kind of girl. I like to keep them simple and easily replaceable since everyday towels do wear out. Guest bathrooms, I think, are the place to get busy (wink, wink). I love these hand-woven Tunisian Fouta Towels ($70), which you can use as a towel, a wrap, a throw, or even a tablecloth. But I suspect they're not very absorptive; to the guest bathroom they go! Looking to introduce some pattern into your bathroom? Casa Quickie: Pattern With Ease

A rug is a wonderful thing, but it also comes with the hassle of spot-cleaning when you spill. And unless you choose a low-pile rug, you may be faced the headaches of shedding. Instead, go with parquet flooring or try stenciling your wood or concrete floors. This will give you the pattern of a rug, but you can mop your floors clean in a jiffy. Beyond that, if you have radiant floor heating, you can also have the warmth of a rug. Plus, if your floors are worn-in and have seen better days, sometimes a paint job and some stenciling is just the camouflage they need.

Inspired: Patterned Lampshade in Drag Me to Hell

I must admit that I am dying to see Drag Me to Hell. I love the premise of the film, which seems especially relevant in today's foreclosure-prone real estate market. In the film, a loan officer (Alison Lohman) evicts an old woman from her home, and is then cursed because of it. Alas, I am the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to scary movies, and I doubt I'd ever sleep again if I saw the movie.
Still, I'm really enjoying many of the photos from the movie's set. I love the patterned lampshade in this photo, and inspired, decided to find some more. The first one that I found was the Selsey Mibo Shade ($100), which is similar to the shade in the film.

Get the Look: Neutral With a Splash

There's no shortage of patterned pillows in the world to love, so where do you draw the line? As someone who is drawn to color and pattern, I've always struggled with this. But, I think the answer is simple: go neutral. This living room has a neutral backdrop: white side table, translucent lamp, beige sofa, white walls, etc. The array of patterned pillows here works because it doesn't have any competition. Beyond that, the two bolder hues - royal blue and lime - are matched by the vase and greenery on the shelf, making it look much more cohesive and composed. Love It or Hate It? Toile

Toile is a style of decorating pattern, short for "Toile de Jouy," with repeated imagery of a pastoral theme, commonly used on curtains, upholstery, and wallpaper. The style originated in 18th-century France, but it became very popular in the late '90s. I had a toile obsession about 10 years ago; I desperately wanted to redecorate everything in a pastel yellow and blue Waverly fabric. Though I'm over my obsession, I know it's still quite popular, and I do think it can be charming for country homes. How do you feel about it?
