Room Therapy: An Outdoor Rug For My Patio

Su Casa member Kimpossible recently bought a new outdoor living set for her back patio from Walmart. It's a great set, with such warm colors, ideal for Summer entertaining. She says, "I have plans to either buy an outdoor rug for the set or paint one on the concrete if I can't find one reasonably priced."
While I love her creative concept of painting a rug onto the concrete, I'm wary of it. Any mistake made (we're all human) would be a permanent one, and if she decided to move the set to a different area, or even get different cushions, she could be left with a painted rug in the wrong place or with the wrong colors. Do You Have an Indoor/Outdoor Rug?

Indoor/outdoor rugs can add instant picnicking or dining space to your deck or backyard. They're also super kid-friendly, since they don't absorb stains. Overstock.com can be a wonderful shopping treasure — kind of like a low-rent ShopStyle. But, unless you have the patience to dig through its wealth of tacky inventory, it is a pain in the bottom. Since I noticed that they have a vast selection of outdoor rugs, and I told you that outdoor rugs were a must-have this month, I decided to be a good friend and weed through them for you. Overstock actually has several rugs that I'm really drawn to, like this Manchester Propylene Area Rug ($114), more so than those from traditionally more stylish retailers like West Elm. Ask Casa: A Similar Script Rug

Hi Casa,
CB2 used to have a rug called Verse (in white with black handwriting, $300-500, right). They no longer carry it and I really want it. The only rug I can find that's remotely close is the DWR Manuscrit Rug ($3,400, left), and that's way out of my price range. Can you suggest any others in the same style that are more reasonably priced?

I love that rug! Good pick. Ballard Designs has a similar rug called Le Poeme ($149-579), which is an indoor/outdoor rug printed with a poem by 17th-century French writer Jean de La Fontaine. It's equally eye-catching and available in both black and chocolate.

If that doesn't work, I recommend scoping out eBay and Craigslist for the Verse rug either used or new.

Steal of the Day: Z Gallerie Soho Pavilion

Z Gallerie's Soho Pavilion ($399.99, reduced from $599.99) is water- and fade-resistant, so you can host a chic party outdoors rain or shine. But, would you blame me for wanting to set up this chic tent indoors? I'm imagining a cross between Nick Olsen's tented workspace and interior designer Marjorie Skouras's oversize indoor topiary bedroom. We don't all have yard space, but this tasseled, Greek-key item could create a loungey, magical space in any room at least 10 feet in height, depth, and width. Just throw in some sisal or a Moroccan-style rug, plants, a hanging lantern, a few floor pillows, and a sofa like west elm's Overlapping Squares Daybed, and you're done. So cozy, yet so transportive and chic!

Su Casa: Kimpossible's Pergola

Do you remember when Su Casa member Kimpossible wrote in asking for suggestions for a rug for her patio? Well, since then her outdoor space has seen some major changes. Not only did she choose a Mad Mats Recycled Rug for the space, but she also installed a pergola! "The pergola is lovely," she says, and "it provides a good amount of shade and respite from the hot desert sun." What's next on the horizon? She'll be putting grass in that section of the yard. If you look closely you can see that she's also added a blue garden stool and planter to bring in a little color.

Get the Look: Kirsten Dunst's Outdoor Lounge

We've been talking a little bit about outdoor furniture lately, now that Summer is approaching. I've been grappling with whether or not I like truly "decorated" outdoor spaces. Seeing the outdoor lounge of Kirsten Dunst's Nichol Canyons home, which is on the market, I'm convinced. Dunst has used bright, solid-colored outdoor upholstery, which isn't as tiring and fleeting as patterns can be. A pair of patterned pillows are easy to switch out. Her outdoor sofa has a little flair with curved arms, but it's still understated. Like one would decorate a living room, she hasn't chosen a furniture set for this space, but thrown some white, vintage chairs in the mix to give it personality. The large, Suzani-esque jute rug is similar to one from Roost, which I've been eyeing for months; it has quiet flair. To see some finds which will help you replicate this look, read more.
