Vintage china cabinets may be beautiful, but their glass doors are too precious for some homes. So if you have an all-wooden armoire or glass china cabinet, you can replace the wooden or glass door façades with chicken coop wire to bring an inherited piece of furniture into the 21st century. Chicken wire offers the visual lightness of glass, but it's less formal - ideal for those of you with eclectic or shabby chic homes. And yes, you could just remove the doors, but this effect is more unique. I love how the collection of beautiful dishes looks stacked in this cabinet. Why hide them?

Cool Idea: Stenciled Shelving

I recently stumbled upon Craftster member Retroeva's post on her kitchen makeover. While I love the new look, my absolute favorite part of the kitchen is Retroeva's stenciled open shelving.

As you know, I'm a big fan of open shelving. I especially love it when a homeowner paints the back wall of the shelving with a contrasting color, or adds wallpaper to the wall. However, until now, I'd never realized the potential oomph that a well-chosen stencil could give this kitchen feature.

Retroeva writes, "After much debate I decided to paint my kitchen red, so I stalked the paint sections at the hardware store and pillaged the paint chips to tape on the wall to gawk at as the sun made its way through the sky and decided on Eddie Bauer's 'Crimson' which is part of his bungalow collection at Lowes. This is the second color of that line that I've worked with and I'm pleased."

I love a good knick-knack shelf, but open bathroom storage can be a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it makes it difficult to hide your more embarrassing toiletries, but on the positive side, you can create pretty vignettes with your most well-designed bottles.

Having open bathroom storage demands that you keep things neat, or are comfortable with mess, and have no embarrassing prescriptions out in the open - that is, if you're expecting guests. In many ways it's just easier to keep things behind closed doors. But open shelving, such as these glass shelves, can make the room seem bigger and also create an elegant display. Americans are too attached to their kitchen cupboards. It's as if they'd never considered storage other than upper cabinets. Open shelving can actually make a kitchen feel open, relieving the tight, cramped feeling that many kitchens have, in addition to leaving space to display artwork and other decorative elements. But if you don't have matching dishes or you're not diligent about stacking them neatly, open shelving can look sloppy. And of course, open shelves attract dust more easily.

Etsy Find: Janet Hill Studios Paintings

For those of us who daydream over shelter magazine spreads and redecorate in our heads, the paintings of Stratford artist Janet Hill are tempting eye candy. On her Etsy site, she notes, "As a result of living in a cold climate for six months of the year, I've developed a strong interest in the beauty of interiors. My inspiration lies in interior, furniture, and fashion design, as well as films. I love the glamour and beauty of interior surroundings."

Perhaps my favorite print of Janet's is this Zucchini Blossoms Print ($11). The open shelving in the center of this photo features elegant dishes, and the cool, green cabinetry and countertops overflow with a Summer garden's bounty.
