I just got a sneak peek of some new lamps, tables, and jewelry that Texas-based designer Brenda Houston is debuting at the Architectural Digest Home Show, which kicks off today in New York — the words crave worthy don't even begin to describe her work! Although in general I recommend choosing natural products over synthetic ones, I do have (at least) one exception. When it comes to the bristled brushes you use for painting your home and furniture, synthetic bristles tends to hold latex-based paints better, applying the paint more smoothly and evenly than natural bristles. I'd long heard this was true, but recently when I was painting my living room, I did indeed find that my two-for-$5 bag of synthetic brushes worked much more nicely than my pricier natural-bristled brushes.

One of my favorite green (and local) companies, Method, has just debuted a new line of laundry detergents. Available in Fresh Air, Peony Blossom, and Free + Clear scents, the detergent's ultraconcentrated formula allows for a much smaller container, 50 percent of it being from recycled plastic. The detergent is made using 95 percent natural and renewable ingredients and is biodegradable and nontoxic.

Are you concerned about the indoor air quality in your home? If not, maybe you should be: harmful toxins in the air within the home, including ammonia and formaldehyde, are commonly found in carpeting, cleaning products, paints, and wallcoverings. One way to combat these toxins is with an air purifier.
