Coveted(?) Crib: Devendra Banhart's Arty Home

To all you hipster kids out there, I thought I'd share this sneak peek into Devendra Banhart's Topanga Canyon, California, home that I found on MTV. In the video, the folk rock musician shows us a photo of Neil Young on his fridge, his couch that once belonged to Jim Morrison, and his jewelry-making studio/desk. Oh yes, and rambles on about political graffiti and the origins of his tattoos.

Bamboo blinds are an ideal way to give your home privacy without blocking out all of the light. I also love their rich, brown hue, and that they're made of a sustainable material. Casa Quickie: Lean and Layer Your Artwork

In last night's episode of The City, Olivia Palermo accepts an editorial job from the creative director of Elle. I love how he's staged his artwork in his office. Leaning and layering framed artwork on a shelf or table is more casual than hanging it, which is ideal for the workplace. It also allows you to rearrange your artwork easily, swapping new pieces in or changing the order of your current ones so you don't tire of them. This style of art display is a bit eclectic, but also quite appropriate for a creative director. If you want to try this in your home, use different frames for each art piece - see how both white and black were used, as well as varying widths? This technique will make each piece stand out from its neighbors. Also, try mixing different mediums of art, such as photography, textiles, and paintings.

Roundup: Rattan Dining Chairs

Heidi and Spencer never were my favorite characters on The Hills, but I did always have an eye for the rattan bar stools in their kitchen. Rattan, as you may know, is essentially thin, pliable stems of palm, making these chairs perfectly appropriate for a California crib. There is a beachy vibe to them, but I think they work well in any atmosphere. I especially like the trapezoid-shaped back of these and the cushioned seat.

If you're a fan, you'll be happy to know you can purchase similar seats for under $100 to around $300. In other words, you don't have to earn a paycheck from MTV to call them your own. See a few similar rattan stools and dining chairs when you read more.

Lauren Conrad's Pad Is Up For Rent

I'm sure all of you Hills fans would kill to replace Audrina in Lauren Conrad's Spanish villa in the Hollywood flats. Well, something tells me that reality is not so far off. Conrad is renting out her 3,009-square-foot, four-bedroom, 3.5-bath home for $11,000 per month. Conrad and her BFF Lo Bosworth moved into a high-rise condo in the Westwood area of LA in favor of more security and privacy. I'm also guessing that Lauren's feud with her neighbors over the commotion of paparazzi and MTV crews at her digs might have motivated her to move elsewhere. Would you like to rent out Conrad's pad? I certainly would! I actually think it's sad that she's decided to move; it's such a cute house. To each her own, right?

On the Market: Molly Sims Selling Her House of Style

Model and actress Molly Sims has listed her 3,043-square-foot, 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath 1930s Spanish house of style in Los Angeles for nearly $3 million, according to Real Estalker. The listing description of the property reads:

Stunningly remodeled 1930s Spanish with Hollywood flair. . . . Timeless enhancements to the already flowing layout. Newer kitchen with Carrara marble, Viking appl., SubZero and wine fridge. 3 true bedrooms with the opportunity for a 4th if needed. 3.5 baths. Antique French limestone FP in living room. Ebony saltillo tile floors. Outdoor living room with views of LA skyline. Huge pergola with dining for 10+. Ultra private rear yard with beautiful pool.

Sims paid $1.425 million for the property in 2003, and since then has had celeb-fave interior designer Kishani Perera of Fuse I.D. polish up the interior with an updated, yet cozy Hollywood-glam style. I once saw a tour of Sims's Hamptons pad on MTV Cribs, so I knew she had good taste. Equally sophisticated, her LA house follows suit, but is less beachy and nautical and more feminine and Hollywood regency. Check out the photos and tell me what you think!

"The Real World" Going Green

Somehow, I totally missed this news from a few weeks ago that the next "Real World" house will be a solar-powered green dwelling. According to Broadcasting and Cable, the 20th season of the reality show will be set in Hollywood and have the roomies living in an eco-friendly house, complete with solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials. Here are some details from the article:

According to MTV, the show will “introduce today’s youth to the ways in which they can incorporate environmentally friendly household items and make eco-friendly lifestyle choices, as seen on The Real World, into their everyday lives.”

In my humble opinion, "The Real World" has been pretty worthless over the past few years and not exactly setting a noble example for America's youth. So I am glad to see MTV trying to use its powers to do some good. I wonder if the green theme will affect the casting too. What do you guys think about the idea?

Great Art Online: Yee-Haw Industries

Yee-Haw Industries was established by partners Kevin Bradley & Julie Belcher, who opened up shop from a back-40 barn in Corbin, Kentucky, with salvaged, antique equipment. Their vibrant, folk art, wood cut prints of country music's classic stars, such as Hank Williams, Sr. and Loretta Lynn, caught eyes and told stories. Soon, modern music acts, including Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and Southern Culture on the Skids began commissioning promotional posters and album art. In 1998, having outgrown the bluegrass barn, Yee-Haw moved to Knoxville, where they offer tours of the Yee-Haw studio in action and maintain a store to sell their wares.

Yee-Haw's work has been honored by selection to PRINT Magazine's Regional Design Annual for seven years running and has been reviewed and featured by The Washington Post, AIGA Journal, Fortune Small Business, Southern Living, Esquire, American Illustration 21, and was recently published in The Art of Modern Rock, the Poster Explosion. Yee-Haw has done fine illustration, as well as design and letterpress, for clients such as RRL-Ralph Lauren, The American Visionary Art Museum, MTV2, and the Cartoon Network. The studio has recently collaborated with the National Gallery of Art to design & produce a unique line of Dada merchandise, available exclusively at the National Gallery for the duration of the 2006 Dada exhibition.

Great Art Online: The Decoder Ring Design Concern

The Decoder Ring Design Concern creates both lovely and edgy silkscreened concert and art posters (thanks for the tip, Penelope829). Founded in 2004, their mission statement is simply "Do work we love for clients we admire." Partners Christian Helms, Geoff Peveto, Paul Fucik, and Derrit DeRouen have worked with clients including Leo Burnett Worldwide, Levis Jeans, Toyota Yaris, MTV, Sony BMG's Epic Records, Capitol Records, South By Southwest, Modest Mouse, Dave Matthews Band, Erykah Badu, and Wilco. Each project Decoder undertakes reflects what they love about design: collaboration with companies, groups, or individuals who have something important to say and deserve to be heard.

According to their site, this group of designers decided on this odd, long name because a decoder ring "is used to solve complex problems, and design concern is an historic term that references the rich heritage of our industry." Since, they also mention that everything is better with bacon or monkeys, I'm not sure if I can take everything this talented crew says too seriously. Though I do believe that GiggleSugar would agree with them about the monkeys.
