Desire/Acquire: Fisherman Pendant Lamp

I love the industrial, retro look of this Modern Dose Fisherman Light ($235). Its silver-toned steel surface provides a great neutral palette that one could decorate around, or simply add to an already-established room's decor. And while it's rather reasonably priced, if I want to decorate with multiples of these (I can see three of them hanging in my kitchen), they do add up.

The Fisherman Ceiling Lamp ($69) is definitely a steal, and while its shape is more cylindrical than round, it's still a close match to the Modern Dose light. It has a tarnish-resistant chrome finish, and is hard-wired. Which one do you prefer? Or does this lamp leave you angling for another alternative?

Nice and New: Aphrodite Shelf

Aphrodite had the mythological ability make any man fall in love with her, but I think she works her ways with the ladies, too. The Modern Dose Aphrodite Shelf ($145) certainly has my heart all aflutter, giving the neoclassical a modern edge with acrylic in the shape of an ancient Grecian bust. And you know me, I always need another place to store all of my shelter magazines! The shelf is available in slick black or white, and as a left and right facing pair, or individually. I'm thinking of getting this goddess look with one on either side of a painting or mirror in my home.

If you're still feeling the zebra trend, but have yet to pick up on it, perhaps the Modern Dose Cowhide Zebra Rug ($475, from $575) is for you. But, this rug is more of a statement than a comfort piece; if you're going for a cozy lounge look, I'd try a Flokati or a shag rug instead. Bear in mind this au courant piece is made of cowhide (though not zebra), so if animal hide is not your flavor, then may I suggest my recent hand-tufted zebra rug steal, instead. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was a decorator. So, I'm continuing on with my seven steps to becoming your own decorator today with some more tips for you. The next step, which you should never lose sight of, is to find your own design style.If you tend to describe or think of your design style as "traditional" or "modern," think again. Design is too complex to be whittled down to those two words, and knowing your tastes more deeply will help you curate your collection of décor, and toss what doesn't fit. Take a look at your inspiration board and see if you can pinpoint your style. Is it masculine, intellectual, and a bit mid-century? Is it girly, Colonial, with a bit of pop art thrown in? Maybe it's cozy, well-traveled, rustic, with a dose of Versailles. Or is moody luxury your thing, with a mix of updated antiques and contemporary furnishings?

One Zebra Rug, Two Ways

The zebra trend is pretty played out at this point, especially when you're talking about genuine animal-hide rugs. But, now there are plenty of zebra print rugs that are actually hooked, and don't endanger any poor zebras. I love the Liora Manne Ravella Rug ($119-$1,349), which has a sort of charcoal-color zebra print. I thought I'd see if I could create two different looks with the rug, beginning with the most obvious, Hollywood Regency. I went for a some tufted velvet, lots of gilding, some graphic shapes, and nailhead trim to add glamour to the wild thing.

For a rustic look, I went with plaids and leather textiles, a faux wooden moose head, and a tree-trunk lamp. But, I added a dose of modernity with a slick red side table and a silk throw pillow. Which look do you prefer?
