Sex and the City: Miranda's Brooklyn Home

By now, I bet the majority of you have seen the Sex and the City movie, right? And if not, you've gotten a taste for the movie's fashion, as well as some of the interiors already. I recently got my hands on some stills from Miranda's Brooklyn house, and had to share them with all of you.
I honestly have to say that Miranda's home is probably my favorite in the entire movie, simply because it is the most real. Even though Miranda and Steve's house has great bones, as well as some lovely home accessories, it is a bit jumbled. And that's okay, because obviously Miranda's life is jumbled, too, what with a child, a full-time job, and other, um, complications that I won't share because I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't yet seen the film.

For instance, take a look at the handprints to the left of the fireplace in the first photo. Those prints tell a story that we, the audience, isn't privy to - it could represent a mischievous painting addition by Brady, or perhaps even a little midpainting make-out session between Steve and Miranda. I also love that many of Miranda's more reserved and uptight UWS apartment accessories can be spotted in the Brooklyn home, though now they are overwhelmed by Brady's gigantic stuffed animals.

Get the Look: Miranda Hobbes' Slick Upper West Side Home Part II

If you read my first post on Miranda Hobbes' home, you're probably aching for more of that successful lawyer style. I'll show you how to get the look of the accents and lighting in her pad, when you read more

The Accents:
Pick some light, girly accents to add a feminine touch to the straight lines of the furniture. Miranda kept antique perfume bottles on her dresser, and chose sheer, airy curtains to let light into her big, pre-War apartment. Make sure to pick up a Starburst Mirror for above your mantle that's hard, sharp, and unusual like Miranda. Leave other decorative touches to a minimum, maybe just some vases, a bedside childhood portrait, and candles. Hang abstract black and white photo prints that are intriguing and sexy. Install clean and classical crown moldings. Purchase a Tibetan-inspired, somewhat mystical painting to hang in the dining room, and lay down a muted toned brocade rug.

The Lighting:
Let the light in with sheer curtains, so you cast soft shadows into the room. Pick a geometric lamp for your bedside table lamp, and put a tall, textured wooden floor lamp and a crystal sphere table lamp next to the couch. Hang boxy, rectangular white pendants over the dining room table-nothing fussy, it doubles as a workspace, remember?

Whatever you do, think conservative. Choose proportion over embellishment, and neatness over clutter like Carrie's creative crib. Choose products that are lean, simple, understated, and very well-made. This is, after all, the Upper West Side.

In honor of all of the recent Sex and The City buzz, I'm going to show you how to get the Miranda Hobbes' look in your city or country dwelling. Miranda was never my favorite Sex and the City character, but I did always appreciate her pretty slick pad. It was very sophisticated and appropriate for a successful New York woman, especially for a partner in a law firm. It was tough like her exterior front, but surprisingly soft and feminine like her maternal side.

The palette:
Keep your color scheme cool. Miranda's walls looked white, although they were actually lilac. If you've got wood floors, go for a dark stain and an ebonized finish. Select backsplash tiles in sage, burnt sienna, and Mediterranean blue.

The furniture:
Go for furniture with a straight, angular or edgy look, just like Miranda's personality. Try a coffee table with criss-crossed legs, and a Parsons Dining Table with mid-century influences that can double as a desk for a hard-working lawyer. Order a few T-shaped Bentwood Chairs with steel framework, and a basic, cream-colored couch. Be sure to select a steel bed frame with long lines, and a tubular shape. Just remember to keep it clean and simple. Spend big paycheck bucks on top-of-the-line kitchen appliances, and be sure to get a fancy coffee maker to keep you going.

Found It! T-Back Dining Chair

Cruising through the portfolio of New York-based architect Diane Kellog, I noticed these T-back dining chairs in her townhouse renovation. Get the Look: Carrie Bradshaw's Creative Crib, the Palette

Last week I showed you how to get the Miranda Hobbes look in your home, and FabSugar showed us how to get the Carrie Bradshaw look for Halloween. It’s only fitting now that you learn to be 100% Carrie by also getting her look in your home. I’ve always been a fan of the “lived in” look of Carrie’s apartment. Like many NYC apartments, it's small, so she has to make room for her creative clutter wherever she can find it. Although Carrie’s not a decorator (she’s a fashionista/writer), her apartment is still stylish and looks put together, even though it’s full of flea market finds. Charlotte, on the other hand, is a decorator and fought to the death with her mother-in-law, Bunny, to take charge of her décor.

The Palette:
Definitely go for a soft color scheme, but with more of a gray hint than Miranda’s. Carrie’s walls are a soft shade of celery green washed with a lavender iridescent glaze. SATC Production Designer Jeremy Conway said, “We employed a particular color theory for each of them that helped in identifying character and personality. The idea is to be able to look at a room and say, ‘Now that’s very Carrie.’” Although there actually isn’t too much color in Carrie’s apartment, the color scheme is very ‘her’ because it serves as a base for her bold wardrobe.

Most of her furniture is wooden, and any upholstered pieces she has are leather or brown or gray-ish fabrics, and her closet is painted sort of a hyacinth gray. The lesson here is to choose soft colors that don’t fight with a colorful, patterned wardrobe, but don’t go all white because that’s just not creative. Bonus question: Can you name the paint color of Carrie's kitchen cabinets? Answer below.
