Which Italian Fashion House Went Craft Punk in Milan?

A luxury Italian fashion house put the design process on display at Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile, asking up-and-coming designers to create objects of art and furnishings using materials discarded from the label's production process, including leather, fabrics, plastic elements, and metal hardware. You never knew your baguette could become a sculpture for your home, did you?

Love It or Hate It? Ermanno Scervino Chair

This chair, which is featured at the 2009 Milan International Furniture Fair, is part of the Ermanno Scervino Home collection. Made of horn and what appears to be woven rope, it's definitely rocking a rugged/refined vibe. Still, something about it doesn't quite sit right with me. Your thoughts?

What I wouldn't give to be in Milan right now! For the next week, if you're lucky enough to be traveling in the area, you should stop by the 48th Milan Furniture Fair, which features the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the Milan Lighting Fair, and the SaloneSatellite, which features creative new talent in the design world. Many designs that I've featured here are featured in the fair, including one of my favorites, Maarten Baas. Cool Idea: Kartell/Philippe Starck Topiary Garden

As part of Milan Design Week 2008, Kartell installed seven 13-foot-tall topiary sculptures depicting a selection of its best known outdoor products at the Triennale Garden in Milan. The super-sized shrubs included a giant Dr. No chair, Victoria Ghost chair, Bubble Club chair, La Boheme stool, and Mr. Impossible chair, all designed by Philippe Starck. Starck announced in March that he will retire in two years, so this foray into the garden serves as a bit of send-off. And, since Starck has expressed shame for driving consumerism and materiality, this is certainly a step in the right direction for him. To see more images of the garden, read more.

Nice and New: Tom Dixon's 2008 Collection

British designer Tom Dixon, who brought you one of my August Must-Haves, has unveiled his 2008 collection, a range of new lighting and furniture, which was on show until yesterday at Superstudio Più in Milan during the Milan Design Week. Some of his new works include his Slab Bench and Chairs, as well as additions to his Copper and Mirrorball collections. The collection, called A Bit of Rough, derives from "a British colloquial saying that typifies down-to-earth characteristics and a straight talking, devoid of affectation attitude." I'm loving the Mirror Ball newly configured as "an array of various sized balls, tightly held in place with robust, industrial strength clamps creating an extraordinary sculptural interior lighting 'tree.'"

Get the Look: Clustered Lampshades at Mr. West

Tired of boring old chandeliers? Take a cue from New York nightclub Mr. West and turn a tabletop accent into something glamorous. The custom-built fixture in this photo is made from oversize lampshades that are dripping with LED lights. Clustered together, they remind me of bell-like delphinium blossoms. So gorgeous, and also so eco, thanks to the LEDs!Want to see where else a similar look was featured? Find out when you read more.

A more casual interpretation was seen at the Milan International Furniture Fair. To get the look, choose lampshades that you love, and then suspend them from a grid, from which they can be hung. You can try eco-oriented light sources, such as chains of LEDs, or simply use cord sets if you're unwilling to hardwire this project.

Whatever you're doing, I want to see it! Diesel Offers More For the Home

Do you love dressing in Diesel? Then you may be interested to hear that you can now outfit your home in its goods as well. Diesel, which introduced its home goods line last April with the Successful Living by Diesel home textiles brand, has partnered lighting manufacturer Foscarini and furniture maker Moroso.

If you happen to be in Milan, you can check out Diesel's new home line at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which runs April 22-27. Head over to the Moroso stand to check out furniture and the Foscarini stand to ogle over Diesel lamps. If you're more into one-stop viewing, the entire Successful Living by Diesel collection, including bed and bath items, can be perused at Diesel's Milan headquarters starting April 23.

"Diesel is a lifestyle brand,” says Diesel president Renzo Rosso. “Consumers choose us not only for the product but also for what Diesel represents: the way of life, our values, the ironic, creative, and unexpected approach.”

While the timing of this launch, especially given the use of luxury brands such Moroso and Foscarini, may be a little off given the economic climate, I am curious to see the entire line. Are you?
