Roundup: A Feel For Copper

Though I've told you time and again that I won't be redecorating my home for Fall, I can't seem to keep autumnal palettes off of my mind. First it was these colorful Fall wallpapers and now I'm dreaming about the warm color of copper. The peachy metal plays well with silver and gold (the two other elements in its family in the periodic table), so it's quite a versatile finish for your home.

I love copper against deep eggplant and midnight blues. In fact, I think these Roost Copper Clad Mirrors ($212) would look smashing against this plum-colored chrysanthemum wallpaper. But if you're not sold on integrating so much of the dapper metal into your décor, there are plenty of smaller accessories and furniture items to choose from. Check out my picks below.

Lovely Little Vignettes: the Silver Chipmunk

This old yellow wood has since been repurposed into part of a shelf, but I liked the way it looked against the vintage silver chipmunk in my kitchen. Someday when I have a place with a yard, the chipmunk might once again return to the outdoors.

Desire/Acquire: Fisherman Pendant Lamp

I love the industrial, retro look of this Modern Dose Fisherman Light ($235). Its silver-toned steel surface provides a great neutral palette that one could decorate around, or simply add to an already-established room's decor. And while it's rather reasonably priced, if I want to decorate with multiples of these (I can see three of them hanging in my kitchen), they do add up.

The Fisherman Ceiling Lamp ($69) is definitely a steal, and while its shape is more cylindrical than round, it's still a close match to the Modern Dose light. It has a tarnish-resistant chrome finish, and is hard-wired. Which one do you prefer? Or does this lamp leave you angling for another alternative?

Cool Idea: Embroidered Metal Lampshades

When I was swinging through the San Francisco Anthropologie store recently, I was stopped in my tracks by these metal pendant lamps.
We all know that objects make a bigger impression when they're arranged in multiples (and three is really a magic number when it comes to arranging), but the multiple lamps weren't what wowed me. It's the impressive embroidery on the metal shades! I'm not sure how they punctured the holes into these - perhaps with a tiny drill bit - but the overall effect is stunning and unexpected.

Cool Idea: The Dressler's Decadent Details

I don't make it a habit to feature restaurants on CasaSugar, but when the interior design of one blows me away, I feel compelled to share. Take the Dressler, a neighborhood restaurant in Brooklyn, NY. While the Dressler serves a restrained, palette-tempting menu, diners are often equally taken with the eatery's décor. Capable of seating 60 diners, the Dressler's main room is an absolute visual treat. A pretty barstool reveals itself, upon closer examination, to be adorned with fairytale characters; a Baroque chandelier is alive with roosting birds.

Owner Colin Devlin showed great foresight when overseeing the interior design of his restaurant, which was completed by Joseph Foglia Designs. And the real charm is in the details: furniture, lighting fixtures, and accents were all made by Brooklyn Navy Yard artisan sculptors.

Roundup: Heavy Metal

Since I found that re-imagined Aluminum Wine Table, I've been keeping an eye out for elegant metal furnishings. I love the interpretation of classic shapes in metallics. Trend Alert: Heavy Metal

I don't know if 15-year-old Taylor Momsen, of Gossip Girl fame, is really into heavy metal. However, I saw Guns n' Roses (and Metallica) when I was 12 so I was a wee rockin' chick. But she certainly played the part recently in Yves Saint Laurent, black leather, shimmering jewels, and smoky eyes. I would like to advocate that one should only attempt this look if they have rock in their soul, or the rock gods would not approve . . .

Cool Idea: Metal Interiors

Are you into adding some heavy metal to your house? I'm not suggesting you start listening to Black Sabbath, of course, but that you experiment with some unusual materials. Take this ribbed metal wall, which I found in Australian architect Cathy Spratt's portfolio. She used metal walls for this beach house bathroom, which lends a vacation-oriented feel to the room. This is such an unexpected and interesting design element, which I think would work perfectly in a beach house or summer home. I'd love to experiment with metal walls. Clean Your Cans

Before opening canned beans, meats, fruits, or veggies have you ever thought about the top of the can? Just close your eyes and try to picture the life of the can in your hand. It went from factory to truck to store, and was probably touched by at least 3 different people before making it to the shelf. I don't even want to think about how many customers picked up that same can too. Maybe the can dropped on the floor and a kid picked his nose and then put it back on the shelf.

As if that isn't gross enough, who knows how long that can has been sitting there, just collecting dust and germs. And when you go to open the can, the top always slides into the food, so all that nasty junk becomes part of your dinner.

Here's an idea. Always wash and wipe off the top of your can before you open it. You'll have piece of mind knowing you got rid of all the dirt, and your food will be spared bits of dust and bacteria.

The same goes for soda cans and pet food. They can get just as grimy.

Nicholas K Fall 2012

Nancy Sinatra's epic "Bang Bang," set the mood for Nicholas Kunz's Fall Nicholas K collection. Inspired by the Taos artists in the '20s and '30s, Kunz imagined a line bursting with Western influence - we loved all of the cool Stetson-inspired hats - and a dash of deco. Fringe was heavily prevalent, making its way onto geometric leather jackets, sheer crochet dresses, and for a vintage touch, metallic fringed flapper dresses. For eveningwear, Kunz showed off her signature draping technique on a variety of gorgeous sexy bias-cut dresses and fluid tops. The outerwear category also shined: parka jackets came complete with inner straps (so the coat can hang just off the shoulders), structured leather jackets highlighted by luxe fur collars, and the closing look featured an undeniably slick black asymmetric leather and canvas zippered coat. Colors: Desert sand, gray, black, army green, sienna.
Key Piece: We loved the simple yet sexy sheer asymmetric and draped dresses; outerwear showed amazing structural pieces.
