Does Your Design Style Rule Your Love Life?

I recently caught a first season episode of Sex and the City, Bay of Married Pigs, where Charlotte dates a man on the marriage track, Sean. Not long after they begin dating, they find themselves looking at china patterns together, and Charlotte dumps him when she realizes his pattern of choice isn't up to her standards. Carrie narrates, "Charlotte ended it right then and there. It would never work. He was American Classic and she was French Country."
Since I've never been in this situation, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing, but it does seem a bit irrational. On the other hand, I can be quite stubborn when it comes to compromising my tastes in interior design.

This Just In: Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler Tie Knot in SF

I've told you about his country home, his textiles, and his pottery, and now I have the pleasure of telling you that Jonathan Adler and his longtime sweetie Simon Doonan were married today in my town, San Francisco! The couple first made it legal at San Francisco's gorgeous City Hall, and later in the afternoon had a more formal Jewish ceremony.

They've been together 14 years, and there were no misty eyes in Room 168, where they signed the marriage papers, Doonan said. "It was fun and happy,'' But, Adler said, it was very romantic, nevertheless.

"I turned off the ringer on my BlackBerry. That's very romantic; it's a big deal for me to do that.''

Wedding Planner: Would You Get Married at Ikea?

Home Away From Home: London's Haymarket Hotel

I have died and gone to hospitality heaven. London's Haymarket Hotel, designed by Kit Kemp, is a stunning example of the sort of marriage between contemporary and traditional design I have been searching for. In this case, it's classic English style that gets a modern lift, as traditional furniture shapes, including many antiques, are updated with bold patterns, playful scale, and thoughtful palettes. Each suite has an individual look, though many share similar furnishings upholstered in their own colors and fabrics. So for frequent travelers, each visit to the Haymarket will be a new experience. From the black, white and yellow lobby with its captivating Tony Cragg sculpture to the "Soholistic" gym with its sleek 60-foot pool lit by ever-changing colored lights, you feel a bit as if you're sightseeing without stepping out onto the streets of London. Registry Roundup: Furniture

Though it may be a bit untraditional, for young couples living on their own for the first time or for recent grad student couples, registering for furniture is a good way to get the basics for your home, without running up credit card debt. In rare cases, a generous relative may pony up and buy you an entire sofa. For everyone else, there are retailers that will allow you to register for items at a range of price points, and then essentially exchange the sum for a credit to spend on a high-priced item you actually want, such as furniture. You can also register for cash gifts on MyRegistry, which can be combined to get you the dining table you're hankering for. If you do decide to register for furniture, choose the basics: bed, dresser, sofa, coffee table, dining table, and ottoman, along with four to six dining chairs. Following those guidelines, I've rounded up several furnishings that I myself would register for. My choices, I think, are a good combination of a masculine color scheme, some feminine curves, and classic designs that should last at least as long as a good marriage. Designer Couples: Charles and Ray Eames

In honor of wedding season here at Sugar, I thought I'd take a look at some marriages that have made major contributions to the world of design. You've heard of "designer babies," but I'm talking about designer couples - be it architects, interior designers, or product designers, there are plenty of wedded duos who prove that "the couple that designs together, stays together."

It's only natural to start with Charles and Ray Eames, arguably some of the most influential designers, who made their mark in the fields of industrial design, furniture design, art, graphic design, film, and architecture. Charles and Ray met in 1940 when Ray enrolled at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, where Charles was teaching and later became the head of the industrial design department. They married in 1941, just a few years after Charles had divorced his first wife. Check out this slideshow to see some of their iconic designs.
