Rachel Ashwell Lists Her Shabby Chic Malibu Cottage

Purveyor of all things shabby chic, Rachel Ashwell has put her 1,783-square-foot, four-bedroom, four-bath Malibu cottage home on the market for $4.4 million. Her beautifully remodeled home features limestone flooring, a brick patio with a spa, and mountain views. It's also surrounded by gorgeous gardens and just steps away from a shared beach access lot with a deck. The interiors, not surprisingly, are dressed in Ashwell's signature white shabby chic style, and look quite cozy and calm. You'd wonder why she'd want to sell this cute home, but I think the fact that her business filed for bankruptcy last year might have something to do with it. From the looks of it, Ashwell's already moved out; it seems pretty empty. But, she also owns another LA area property, so perhaps this was just her beach house. Coveted Crib: Malibu Minimalist

Hollywood interior designer Michelle Workman has designed spaces for celebs including John Travolta and Jennifer Lopez, but in my opinion, this Malibu pad deserves a starring role as well.

Michelle explains,

I was brought onto this job during the construction phase, and I wanted to bring the organic feel of Malibu into the home. My main focus was on the surfaces: flooring, countertops, tile and lighting. We ended up with a home that feels as if you are out of doors at all times; even the kitchen countertops look like swirling tidal pools. In an effort to mirror the many banks of windows that constitute the front of the house, Lucite chairs, occasional tables, and hardware were used in the kitchen. Everywhere you look organic is juxtaposed with steel or man-made materials.

Shannen Doherty Relists Her Malibu Ocean-View Pad

In the life of a 90210 alum, $400,000 is small change. Shannen Doherty has willingly agreed to part ways with a few hundred k, dropping the price on her 3,410-square-foot, five-bedroom Malibu pad from $4.4 million to $4 million.I'm not wildly impressed with the architecture of the contemporary home, although its high-pitched ceilings and picture windows are a plus. But in terms of privacy, it seems like an ideal place for a career celeb to live. It's set back from a long, tree-lined private street and has mature, towering trees surrounding its landscaped grounds, from which you can see the coast and ocean.

As for Doherty's choice in décor, I'm on the fence. Neutral and white tones give it a relaxed vibe, and an array of wooden, Eastern furnishings give it a well-traveled look. However, the design seems a bit jumbled; there's no cohesive theme, and a prominently displayed, oversize Maxim cover of a scantily-clad Doherty is, in my opinion, in poor taste. But I guess if you've got it, flaunt it.

Get the Look: Barbie Dream House

Barbie celebrated her 50th birthday on Monday in a real-life Malibu dream house designed by Jonathan Adler. I showed you Adler's sketch-up earlier this week, but now I've got photos of the real thing. I'm always smitten with Adler's work, and growing up I was a die-hard Barbie fan, so naturally I love this space. I figured you might as well so I decided to show you how to get the look of her bona-fide pad! To hear how, read more.

The focal point of the room is Barbie's retro, curved sofa. On my recent Room and Board tour, I spotted a similar design, the Reese L-Shaped Sectional with Right-Back Sofa and Curved Corner ($2,499–3,699), which will help you get the look in your digs.

Adler used his own designs for the throw pillows. Take your pick from this selection.

You can find silver Moroccan poufs just like Barbie's at Tazi Designs for $199.

The one-of-a-kind starburst mirror on the far right is made from 64 dolls. But, if you're crafty you can DIY one by adhering your collection of dolls to a round mirror frame yourself.

The small white side table beside the sofa is the Jonathan Adler Preston End Table ($695). The small red chair beside it is the Jonathan Adler Addison Chair ($1,650) in Denmark Poppy.

The Stephen Schubel Stunning 4-Piece Round Sofa ($14,000) is close runner-up to Barbie's fantastic tufted sofa.

Barbie Celebrates Her 50th in a Jonathan Adler Dream House

Happy Birthday, Barbie! It's been 50 years since Barbie was first introduced at the New York Toy Fair, and she's still as stylish as ever. Tonight she celebrates the big 5-0 with a star-studded birthday bash (orchestrated by celeb event planner Colin Cowie) at a real 3,500-square-foot Malibu Dream House decorated by Jonathan Adler, complete with a pink carpet entrance. The digs have been outfitted with "skirted, corseted, lace-up dress chairs, a chandelier, a closet filled with thousands of shoes, a sunburst mirror made from 65 Barbie dolls, and a garage that includes a real Barbie Volkswagen New Beetle car (all pink with a motorized, pop up vanity in the trunk)," in addition to a Barbie museum dedicated to displaying the original iconic doll, among other famous dolls. If this rendering of the living room by Jonathan Adler is any sign, Barbie's Dream House is one coveted crib, and her fête will be a memorable one.

Leo Trades in Pacific Coast View, Lowers Carbon Footprint

Leonardo has finally closed on the eco-friendly Battery Bark Condo that he went to contract to purchase back in April, paying nearly $3.7 million. But, ever the environmental advocate, DiCaprio isn't swooping up energy-hogging properties left and right. He's made room for this purchase in his real estate portfolio and his wallet by putting his 2,374-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath midcentury oceanfront Malibu home on the market for nearly $9 million.
DiCaprio can gaze at the Hudson River through the energy-efficient triple-layered windows at Riverhouse, one of the greenest residential buildings in America. DiCaprio's new apartment building exceeds Gold LEED certification, using solar-powered energy and built with only nonpollutant materials. Among its other eco features are programmable thermostats, filtered air, filtered water, locally quarried bluestone, recovered barn wood, low- or no-VOC adhesives, paints and carpeting, and recycled, salvaged, and biodegradable materials. There's no word on the exact square footage of Leo's new pad, but a listing for a similarly priced Riverhouse property measures in at 1,985-square-feet, with 3 bedrooms and 4 baths.

On the Market: The Polaroid Beach House

The celeb-ridden Polaroid Beach House, an infamous party spot frequented by scenesters like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan in Malibu, has just been put on the market for the whopping price of $32 million. The house was basically one big product placement, used by the owners, the Polaroid company, to throw parties for young Hollywood that'd be snapped by paparazzi, discreetly landing their products all over the tabloids. But apparently, that promotional scheme was nixed by "local (rich) neighbors who objected to the around-the-clock revelry in the summer of 2007." This Just In: You Too Can Live Like Goldie Hawn

According to Real Estalker, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have put their ocean-front Malibu hideaway up for rent for the summer at the whopping price of $95,000 per month, from June to September. The listing for the property, which they also rented out last year, reads:

Beautiful Balinese inspired home on deep sandy dunes, with gated entry. Oceanfront master bedroom suite with awe inspiring views, 2 large guest suites, office, sexy media room, and open kitchen living area overlooking oceanfront patio with intimate fireplace/gathering area and bar b que. Detached guest house with gym, kitchen and meditation room.

I suppose this means the couple doesn't dig the beach as much as their lovely daughter does . . . but then again, Goldie has been looking pretty tan lately. And you too can have that Goldie glow, if you're willing to drop $95k next month, that is.
