Philippe Starck and Karl Lagerfeld Guest Edit Wallpaper*

Wallpaper* has called on two titans of the design world, Philippe Starck and Karl Lagerfeld, to guest edit its October issue. Beginning by pushing the boundaries of magazine production, Starck designed the first triple-layered, transparent front cover, while Lagerfeld introduced the first peelable front cover.

As for the editorial, Starck approached scientists, physicists, cosmologists, artists, and activist rock stars, on a "mission to make intelligence sexy." Meanwhile, Lagerfeld brought his photography skills to light, following his new model muse and coverman Baptiste Giabiconi "from Ancient Rome to mid-century Paris," revealing a passion for architecture. I love to see these design icons moving beyond the parameters we're used to seeing them in, not only taking on new roles as editors but showing that they're not one-trick ponies. This year we said goodbye to Home, O at Home, and Cottage Living, and many of those shelter mags that aren't closing shop are still teetering. With shelter magazines folding left and right, this is a tough category, but there's still plenty of great content out there. So tell me, which is your fave?

Are You Heading to the Domino Bazaar?

If you're in the Los Angeles area this weekend, I suggest you head over to H.D. Buttercup for the Domino Bazaar.

Open to the public from Oct. 17-19 from noon to 6 p.m. daily, the bazaar will feature a mix of green products, art, budget-friendly furnishings, super high-end designer goods, and antiques for the home and garden. Everything has been hand-selected by Domino staff, and styled into room vignettes. In addition, there will be a full roster of classes on everything from decorating to cooking. Oh, and as added temptation, everything will be 15 to 30 percent off retail price.

You can buy tickets on the website or purchase them at the door. Each $20 ticket includes a one-year subscription to Domino, and $5 goes to ACRIA, the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America. It's a great price to support a great cause, and of course, there will be a tempting variety of gorgeous home products to gawk over. Sounds like the perfect weekend event to me!

Open House: Magazine Hoarding

I heart magazines. I heart and star and rainbow and unicorn them. Especially shelter magazines. It's kind of a problem, a real dilemma. At this very moment, there are six mags sitting beside me untouched because I simply don't have enough time to read all that I'd like to. So, they pile up. And, the magazines in my home are another story. Even those that I have read, marked with dog-ears, etc., I can't seem to part with. I know there are over a dozen ways to repurpose your magazines, but they're too precious to me to do so. It pains me to cut them up. How about you? Do you have a problem with hoarding magazines? Do you recycle them? Repurpose them? Do you save them? Do you even read magazines at all or are you a blog fiend? Tell me by commenting below!

DIY: Cereal Box Magazine Holder

With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.

Here are the steps:

Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).
Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.
If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.
Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.
Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.
Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.
Set your magazines in the box. Fini!

This Just In: ReadyMade's Green Issue Available Online!

Check out all of the cool DIYs, online exclusive pieces, and clickable table of contents. I don't know about you, but I'm a huge ReadyMade fan, and offering readers a tree-free version is super smart for this green design issue. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go read up on organizing my garden gear.

Nice and New: Organic Style Magazine Now Online

Organic Style recently launched an online magazine, chock full of great tips and articles on living green. Articles in the premier issue include a look at the organic cotton industry specific to luxury home goods, a profile of the original family who started Organic Style Magazine when it was first a print publication, and tons of other great tips and ideas for anyone who’s looking to live a greener lifestyle. This Just In: SFGirlbyBay Featured in Aussie Glossy

I'm happy to report that my fellow blogger Victoria Smith, a.k.a. sfgirlbybay, and her magnificent San Francisco home were featured in the Aussie glossy, Real Living. Design*Sponge was nice enough to share beautiful photos from the issue, and I thought I'd pass them along as well. I love how Victoria's house is so light and airy; it looks like such a relaxing place to call home. It's inspiring to see how she's made blank white walls look so fresh. I also adore her pastel-toned accents, summery "hits of orange and pink," and her flawless mix of farmhouse and midcentury style furniture.

Metropolitan Home Folds

Another one bites the dust. Hachette Filipacchi Media announced today that it will fold Metropolitan Home with its December issue. The company plans to focus its efforts on its other shelter glossy, Elle Decor. HFMUS President and CEO Alain Lemarchand said, "We believe the best strategy in the upscale shelter segment is to boldly focus our resources and investment on Elle Decor, which is the ad-page leader within the US market. Despite the downturn in ad pages that has affected all magazines, the Elle Decor brand has multiple opportunities for growth across all platforms.” Met's longtime Editor in Chief Donna Warner and her staff will leave the company.

This closure follows a long string of folds in the shelter world, including HFMUS's own Home, House & Garden, Blueprint, O at Home, Cottage Living, and, of course, Domino. So while it's not a shocker considering the economic climate, it is still sad news indeed. But at least this glossy went out with a bang, wowing us with the Metropolitan Home Showtime House and the exquisite Modern by Design Showhouse this year.
