DIY: Cereal Box Magazine Holder

With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.

Here are the steps:

Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).
Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.
If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.
Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.
Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.
Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.
Set your magazines in the box. Fini!

Nice and New: Thomas Paul Magazine Holder

I'm not sure how long this Thomas Paul Magazine Holder ($18) has been in stock at Doe, but it's new to me, so I'm going to let this one slide! I've never seen Thomas Paul textiles on a magazine holder before. And, since I won't be throwing down for his rug that I'm pining for anytime soon, I figure an $18 magazine holder is a more affordable approach to getting some TP in my life! I love the color scheme and the sweet bluebird pattern; it reminds me of my favorite Adam Green song. Plus, my shelter magazine collection is getting a bit unruly these days . . .

Room Therapy: Metal Accordion File Holder

Dear Casa,
Can you ask your readers for help? I saw a metal accordion-style file holder in a magazine in the last few weeks. I can't find the magazine and I am trying to buy something similar for my office. It was something from the May issue of a design mag. Thanks for any help you can offer!

How-To: Repurposing Your Magazines

Since it's eco chic month, I can't tell you to avoid reading all of your favorite fab fashion magazines (or shelter magazines), but I will give you a few tips on what to do with your mags when you've finished. It's always nice to pass them along to friends, but if your friends aren't eco-conscious, it's likely they'll end up in a landfill. So, here are a few suggestions on what to do with your light reading when it starts to get heavy.

Make a mobile out of them.
Make a box out of them.
Transform them into an art-like wall-hanging.
Turn them around and around into a bowl.
Weave them into a clutch (and have the MoMA sell it).

There are many, many more where these came from, so read more.

Craft them into a square mirror or a round mirror.
Make them into round placemats or rectangular ones.
Roll them up to use as a vase or utensil holder.
Frame your pretty face with them.
Make a waste basket out of them.
Wear a recycled magazine bracelet on your wrist.
Turn them into bows to wrap your presents with.
Secure your invites to the fridge by gluing them to magnets.
Make paper beads from them, or paper bead fine art.
Create disco madness.
Make a collage and hang it on your wall.
Or, use them to store more magazines!

Good question; I love my lace basket! The basket is the Design House Stockholm Carrie Shopping Basket. I recently wrote about how the basket is selling at the Container Store for $29.99. It's also available as a bicycle basket with hardware. Hope that helps!

You might have seen the Design House Stockholm Carrie Shopping Basket when I featured it in my Not Your Grandma's Lace Trend Alert, or even snuck a peek of it used as a magazine holder in my very own house. I must admit, I shelled out $44 for the basket from Zinc Details - kind of a lot for my shelter mag storage, but I couldn't resist! When I caught it selling for $37 at Unica Home, I felt a little cheated. Now that I've seen it selling at the Container Store for $29.99 (what a steal!), I really just feel as dumb as a rock. But, perhaps this means I can snatch one up to use as an actual shopping basket. : )

Nice and New: San Francisco Previews New CB2 Store

Earlier today, I had the good fortune to peruse some of the CB2 items that will be available at San Francisco's new CB2 store, which is opening in Union Square on July 31. San Francisco will be the fourth US city to host a CB2 store, and the first west of Chicago. The new store will feature all of the great furniture and home accessories you find in CB2's catalog in an easily navigable, relaxed 8,000-square-foot retail space. Also tempting is that many of the new store's furniture items are scaled down to work in small urban apartment spaces (perfect for SF studio dwellers).

I had the chance to chat with the delightful Marta Calle, product director for CB2, who clued me in on the thinking behind CB2's design ideas. She explained that CB2's design philosophy involved creating a modern, simple, and relaxing interior that would inspire people to feel comfortable in their homes. The limited color palette, clean lines, and use of natural materials (as well as the darn reasonable prices), all contribute to this goal. Of course, given my eco bent, it's no surprise that my eyes were immediately drawn to the Lanai Dining Table ($599), which I've seen online, but is so much more impressive in person. The table is solid shesham wood, which is also known as Indian rosewood and has beautiful color variation, which is only enhanced by the water-based, natural linseed oil finish. The table, as Marta explained was, in the good, better, best hierarchy, definitely "a best product."

After perusing the preview of the store, I'm even more excited to check out the new San Francisco CB2 in person at the end of the month. While I love shopping online, I'm also a fairly tactile-oriented person, and it's darn fun to check out an Industrial Pendant Lamp or Walnut Magazine Holder with my own two hands.
