Not everything made my shortlist of favorites for the year - the ones that did, though, were the series I couldn't turn off and can't wait to see more from in 2010.

Mad Men creator Matt Weiner has said Helen Gurley Brown's Sex and the Single Girl and Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique are major influences on the show, but we have yet to get a gander at any characters reading those books. Yet the characters do read plenty, and thankfully, the books of Mad Men are as carefully chosen, as we'd hope. Each tells us something about the character and the time. Let's find out what.

It's not easy being Betty Draper. The trendy housewife and former model from AMC's Mad Men has to keep up appearances, keep up with three children, and keep her often chaotic emotional life on track. She certainly deserves a few push presents after delivering her new baby and putting up with Don's adulterous antics. I've offered up some suggestions for how I'd wire hubby Don Draper, but it's Betty's turn.

The charming Mrs. Draper is all about keeping up with the Joneses, so instead of relying on predomindately vintage-inspired gizmos, I've collected an assortment of retro and modern devices that would assure the couture gal stayed connected if she were living in current day.

How Not to Behave: Career Lessons Learned From Mad Men

When it comes to workplace drama, Mad Men has it all: high-stakes accounts, employees fighting for promotions and power, interoffice affairs, drinking on the job, and professional talent clouded by shenanigans, secrecy, and even sexual harassment. Whenever I watch the show I am both captivated by the saucy situations and characters and thankful for how far we have come as professionals since the 1960s.

The plotlines that evolve within the powerful Sterling Cooper agency and its smart but unruly ad men and women are dramatized for our viewing pleasure, but it is true that office culture has changed substantially in the last 40 years. If it hadn't, we wouldn't be so shocked and awed when we see the way the characters talk to one another. There there are plenty of lessons we can learn from the (mis)behavior on the show. Find out what they are before you start bringing back early morning scotch breaks and get sent to HR.

Sex in the '60s: What Mad Men Tells Us About Love

Season three of Mad Men starts this Sunday, and we're counting down the days until it's 1960-something - we don't even know what year it will be! The show jumps from 1960 in season one to 1962 in season two, so it's likely that a year or more will have passed.

Perhaps the most entertaining thing about the show is learning about 1960s etiquette and ethos, and nowhere is it more apparent than with the characters' relationships. I've found quotes from major characters that not only illustrate how they see love and sex, but also what relationships and gender roles looked like in 1962.
