Do You Ever Use Soft Pink Bulbs?

I have a variety of lamps in my bedroom, as well as overhead lighting, which I use for all different purposes. I pretty much only use my globe floor lamp when I'm in relaxation/reading/near-sleep mode, though. It casts a nice glow in the room and has a dimmer so I can change the intensity of the light. I wanted to make it even more ambient, so I picked up a soft pink bulb to try. It's really subtle, and the hue gives it a warmer, sleepier feel that I love! I wouldn't say it's ideal for all lamps and purposes, but for this one it's just right.

Nice and New: Mason Jar Lights

Oh how I love me some mason jars. Among preserving jams, pickling tomatoes, shedding garden light, and showcasing healthy blossoms, the time-tested glass container has one more job to add to its already impressive résumé.

The crafty folks at Pigeon Toe Ceramics have a different take on the old classic. Familiar with their ceramic ways, the artists cast a large mason jar in porcelain and turned it into this Mason Jar Pendant Light ($108). Allowing the light to escape easily, they left the bottom open and kept it unglazed for a clean, raw look. Lucky for my wallet, I don't have a place for the light fixture in my kitchen but I'd love to see these jammin' jars hanging over a funky breakfast bar, perhaps with a vintage Coca-Cola sign hanging in the background.

Guess Who Designed This Pendant Shade?

I recently hung this ethereal pendant shade, which is made of a whimsical waterfall of lacy lasercut flowers, in my living room. Can you name the person who designed it? Hint: He's a noted industrial designer.

Casa Beta: C.Z. Guest Candles

First off, if you are unfamiliar with the iconic late C.Z. Guest, do a quick Google search or brush up on the cliffs-notes here. I purchased this candle at Annie's last summer in Vail, CO. Annie's is one of my favorite shops in the village, and regrettably, they do not have a website. If you are ever there for holiday, or just driving through, stop at Annie's! They have a selection of china, dishes, candles, bath and body products, and all sorts of wonderful things. I pop in every Summer and I am never disappointed. Imagine my delight when I saw the C.Z. Guest candles . . . on sale! You better bet I snatched one up! Truth be told, I would have purchased it had it not been on sale, but I guess it was my lucky day.

The genius thing about this candle is that it literally lives on. The jar is actually a handmade flower pot, and the candle box is packaged with a seed packet. Once the candle is spent, you plant the flowers and grow them in a delightful little pot! Perfect for a guest bath or the kitchen window ledge.

Nice and New: Diesel Home Launches in the US!

Diesel's Successful Living home collection, which launched to the trade in Milan last year, is now ready for public viewing, lighting, and sitting in the US! The line includes lamps by Foscarini and furniture by Moroso, including tables, chairs, sofas, casegoods, and even a folding screen, ranging from $350-14,500. In tune with Diesel's edgy aesthetic, the pieces have three distinct themes: Music, Retro, and Discovery.

By far, the faceted Rock Pendant (left) and Bar Stool Stud (right) are the strongest, most original pieces. The pendant has a moody architectural quality, and it would triumph in any modern home. I love how subtle the bar stool's studs are; just that little bit of trim keeps it from being overdone. It looks comfortable, too! There's also a mirror with studded trim that's a riff on the BBDW Captain's Mirror; kind of cool, but I like the original better.

Other items, like those with hairpin legs and bent plywood forms, are clearly inspired by midcentury designs, but don't quite succeed. Some pieces, like the X-ray/turntable-inspired coffee table, or the media console à la amplifier storage, have a contrived rock 'n' roll thing going on that's too trendy for investment purchases.

Assisted Living: A Light Fixture Made From Colanders

I'm looking for ideas for lighting my kitchen. My kitchen is long and narrow. The style is Medieval-ish; this site shows what I'd like my kitchen to look like. I aready have the brickwork and dark wood going on. I was thinking of using copper colanders in some way, but I'd like some examples to get a feel for how I want to place: lights, colanders, etc.

Zyada, I love your idea of using light fixtures made from colanders! It's perfect for a kitchen. Copperware would also work really well with your Medieval theme. If you want to make your own hanging colander light fixture, like the one shown at left, here is a tutorial to make one. You can also make a table lamp with a colander shade - here are instructions. You could also try hanging light spheres using two colanders enclosing the bulb - learn how here. Or, you could make a sconce, installing the colander directly to the wall.

Another way to integrate copper colanders is to use them as vases, or even simply as bowls for your fruits and veggies.

Does anyone else have ideas for Zyada as to how she can use copper colanders in her kitchen, be it a light fixture or something else? Please comment below!

Julie Neill Shows Saints Love With Who Dat Chandeliers

Super Bowl XLIV may be complete, but excitement over The Saints' win isn't dimming anytime soon. That's especially true if you've got a Who Dat chandelier hanging in your home! In a fit of "Geaux Saints" spirit last week, New Orleans-based lighting designer Julie Neill cooked up these two chandeliers in honor of her beloved Saints team. Bearing the boys' signature black and gold colors, with dangling Mardi Gras beads and fleur-de-lys, she says, "They were meant to embody the spirit of New Orleans, which is beauty with a sense of fun, and some Mardi Gras thrown in, too!"Most sports-inspired décor or "memorabilia" tends to be tacky, but Neill's chandeliers are quite sophisticated, and a great compromise for a "man cave" that meets a lady's standards, too. In fact, Julie tells me that one customer ordered one for his TV room where he and his friends watch all the Saints games "religiously." Of course, it works in the Saints favor that their logo bears a symbol as pretty as the fleur-de-lys. I'd love to have the black chandelier even if I weren't a Saints fan - how glam! Love It or Hate It? Bulb Chair

The shape of Belgian designer Gaëtan Van de Wyer's Bulb Chair (price available upon request) reminds me of a Dr. Seuss illustration. It's made of eco-friendly materials like rattan and water hyacinth, and eliminates the need for a reading light, since one is built right into the chair.
