Cool Idea: A Paint Can Stool

I just noticed this paint can stool in a home on Light Locations, and am completely smitten. Not only is this DIY furniture a great way to repurpose an old paint can (although you know you can recycle them), but it's also just downright cute. I love how this one was upholstered with vintage-looking fabric; it's like a really artsy mushroom. It's a great way to stock up on spare seating or side tables without spending much (or any) money. The top could even be upholstered with the fabric from an old t-shirt or sweater. You definitely need a gallon can to make a substantial seat. If you don't have one, ask your local paint shop or hardware store if they have any leftovers.

Coveted Crib: Lovely and Light Near London

Sometimes we get so caught up with trendy accessories and of-the-moment palettes that we forget to consider the feel of the homes we're creating. It's no secret that all-white rooms have a relaxing effect. But throw natural materials, well-loved hardwood floors, worn upholstery, and a collection of vintage and antique accessories and furnishings into the mix, and what you have is a home that's not concerned with the latest and greatest, but is simply content as is. Love It or Hate It? A Wall of Mismatched Mirrors

In this very eclectic living room, which I think belongs to photographer Debi Treloar, one wall is adorned with an arrangement of mismatched ornate gold mirrors in varying shapes and sizes. In general, I feel like it's hard to go wrong with a mirror. Here, I think the disparity of the mirrors works with the room's sort of lost-and-found vibe. But I'm not sure it would work everywhere. What do you think?

Coveted Crib: Calm and Restrained in London

Decorating is not like getting dressed. While buying all the clothes you love will result in a beautiful wardrobe, you must execute restraint when shopping for your home - otherwise your digs will be an uncohesive headache. But that doesn't mean you have to live in a white box or be super matchy matchy. The owners of this beautiful London home know what I'm talking about. They've chosen a calm, mostly neutral palette with touches of soft color and pattern. There's no more than one element that stands out in each room - a modern blue-wing chair in the living room, a wall of patterned wallpaper in the bedroom - which allows your eyes to rest. Beyond that, the home is accessorized but not overly so. There's no clutter or too many items competing for your attention in one place. Just looking at it, I feel calm. Coveted Crib: Lamptastic in London

Any good interior designer will tell you that lighting is everything. But when we regular folk start decorating our homes, it's usually the last thing we think about. Furniture first. And when designers say "lighting is everything," they're not talking about the style of a floor lamp, but the light it gives off. But, if a lamp is unique enough, it can make a room. Take three wild, fringed Victorian lamps, two oversize candelabras, and a set of candlesticks and put them in one room, and you've got it made. That's what the owners of this eclectic Victorian house in London, which is used for photo shoots, did and I can't help but feel a twinge of "I wish I were cooler" just looking at it. A Shaker rocking chair covered in fabric. A patchwork sofa. A moss-covered loveseat in the garden. This house, with its wealth of theatrical, mix-and-don't-match furnishings set on a solid gray and white background, suggests that overdoing it may be the only way to do it. Take a gander at FabSugar UK or a peek at Jade Jagger's London pad, and you'll see that British style is hard to beat. Pair that eclectic fashion with gorgeous architectural details and you've got an Olympian on your hands. The great bones of this large Georgian home in London are dressed with unique, luxurious furniture like an antique daybed and roll-top tub and cheeky accessories like a Mad Hatter lamp shade, a Cameroon headdress, and Fornasetti plates. The eclectic interior of this homestead is definitely top-notch in my book, but those of you with more reserved tastes will still drool over the beautiful natural light and stunning original architectural details. Coveted Crib: Midcentury Neutrals in Camden

This lovely light-filled house in Camden, England is heavy on the midcentury furnishings, but its neutral and soft blue palette and Georgian architectural details prevent it from looking like a tear sheet from a 1950s shelter pub. Fabulous natural light, a living room and bathroom opening out to a balcony, and a roll-top tub are some of my most coveted features, but I'll take a Barcelona and a Swan chair any day.
