Cool Idea: Lamp Kit Hanging Light

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of interior stylist and designer Sibella Court, and was wowed by the hanging light fixture. To me it looks like a lampshade was simply attached to a basic Lamp Cord Kit ($12), and then dangled from the molding. The shade would probably need to have a bulb clip top fitter, too. I love the juxtaposition of the lowbrow lamp cord with that debonair black bell-shaped shade.

I'd love to try this at home. I'm thinking of making my own with a shapely lampshade frame and a reproduction Edison bulb. What do you think?

Inspired: Patterned Lampshade in Drag Me to Hell

I must admit that I am dying to see Drag Me to Hell. I love the premise of the film, which seems especially relevant in today's foreclosure-prone real estate market. In the film, a loan officer (Alison Lohman) evicts an old woman from her home, and is then cursed because of it. Alas, I am the biggest scaredy cat when it comes to scary movies, and I doubt I'd ever sleep again if I saw the movie.
Still, I'm really enjoying many of the photos from the movie's set. I love the patterned lampshade in this photo, and inspired, decided to find some more. The first one that I found was the Selsey Mibo Shade ($100), which is similar to the shade in the film.

Love It or Hate It? An Upside-Down Lampshade

I spotted this room on Swedish real estate site Alvhem and was swept away by the table lamp flipped on its head. Here, I love it - granted, in part because the shade and base are gorgeous. I think it could definitely be executed effectively in another instance, but I can also see it failing miserably. Do you like this trick?

Nice and New: Henry Road One-of-a-Kind Chandeliers

I've always been a super fan of Henry Road's cheerful textiles, but my trouble is that I love them all. So, I'm thinking Henry Road's quirky new One-of-a-Kind Lampshades ($175 and up) are the next best thing. These whimsical light fixtures are made with a Victorian shade wire base, covered in a wide selection of vibrant fabric remnants, and then sealed. In-stock shades are for sale, and custom lampshades can also be commissioned. I think the price is pretty fair for a bespoke piece, but I'm also thinking it could be a pretty simply DIY. All you'd need is a Victorian wire lampshade frame ($16-$25), some sealer like Mod Podge, and a stack of Henry Road fabric remnants. Do you like them? Would you buy them or attempt to re-create them on your own?

Cool Idea: Embroidered Metal Lampshades

When I was swinging through the San Francisco Anthropologie store recently, I was stopped in my tracks by these metal pendant lamps.
We all know that objects make a bigger impression when they're arranged in multiples (and three is really a magic number when it comes to arranging), but the multiple lamps weren't what wowed me. It's the impressive embroidery on the metal shades! I'm not sure how they punctured the holes into these - perhaps with a tiny drill bit - but the overall effect is stunning and unexpected.

DIY: Map Lamp

If you have an armchair explorer in your house (you know the type, they have a whole drawer in a cabinet stuffed with maps and atlases), then I have a perfect project for that special wanderer. Chez Larsson came up with this easy and fun lampshade project that will add some topography to your living room, without putting a dent in your pocketbook.

What You'll Need

White lampshade
Map
Cutting surface, such as cutting board
Spray adhesive
Scissors or Exacto knife

Here's how to do it, from Chez Larsson:

Measure between the edges of the lampshade and cut a long strip that covers the shade and then some.
Spray permanent spray adhesive onto the back of the map in a well-ventilated area and affix to the outside of the shade, smoothing out any air bubbles with your hands.
Let dry, and enjoy!

Steal of the Day: PBteen Petite Lamp Base and Shade

If only it were sensible to swap out lamps like throw pillows, I could rationalize buying myself the PBteen Petite Lamp Base and Shade ($49). Actually, I'd snatch up all three. I simply adore their bulbous little ceramic bases, and I love the mix of all three together even more. I might have to change the shades though; I'm not sure the PBteen palette is my style. Oh wait, I don't have one more inch of space (or need) for another lamp in my house. Perhaps I can upgrade to a bigger pad to make room?

Crafty lady Tresa Edmunds had two boring pendant lamps that needed to be changed out. She writes, "I bought two plain jane lampshades at Home Depot on clearance. Because the shades needed to hang from the ceiling, I needed shades with hardware conducive to that. Then I found this great fabric at a quilt store that had nearly every color I was working with. With all my materials, the rest was just a case of reverse engineering."

Nice and New: Anthropologie Plumage Shade

For those of you who decided to splurge on the Peacock Chair, I have found the perfect lamp shade to go with it! And for those who restrained themselves, I've got a more affordable ostentatious bird for you. The Anthropologie Plumage Shade ($108) is embroidered in silk with peacocks strutting about a navy cotton background. It may be overly embellished for some, but if you've taken a liking to the peacock trend, I'm sure you can handle a little fuss. What do you think?
