Kyle Schuneman Redesigns the Tyra Banks Show Office

The Tyra Banks Show recently called upon one of my Designer Spotlights, Kyle Schuneman, to transform its drab and boring office into a fabulous workspace. Kyle started by painting the walls a serene blue with eco-friendly, zero-VOC paint. Then, he anchored the room with a Room and Board Parsons Desk and brought in a file cabinet with classic lines for storage. Nature-inspired curtains from Lotus Bleu added some pattern and chimed in on the earthy blue of the walls, while the Palladian Urn Crystal Lamp from Restoration Hardware gave the space polish.

I love how he mixed an Eames task chair knock-off with a Louis XIV side chair at the desk, flawlessly blending different eras and styles. Off to the side of the office, Kyle brought in the Urban Outfitters Antoinette Fainting Sofa, which countered the hard lines of the desk with feminine curves, and created a glamorous space to relax in with a mirrored table at its side. As for artwork, he displayed antique wallpaper in baroque frames from Ikea. Easy, instant, beautiful! See before and after photos and a widget of some of the products used when you read more.

Summer Style: Design Tips From Kyle Schuneman

Regarding Summer style, I think it is all about an effortless flow. I always think of Summer as a smell in the air - a light and fun idea that really has no rules. For Summer, I like using materials like glass and sisal to keep a clean and fresh look. For a flower store that I just revamped, I actually covered a chair in moss, which is a whimsical idea to bring a natural aspect to your design. Whether you complement your home with a great plant stand or a fun side chair in your Summer garden or a sculptural item in your sun room, just one special piece will be a great addition for Summer style.

How-To: Create a Moss Chair

Last week, I introduced you to talented designer Kyle Schuneman, who's known for his innovative small space design. Kyle recently created this cool moss chair. Luckily for all of us, he also sent along directions on how CasaSugar readers can get the look of this awesomely garden-inspired seating option.

Find a side chair that has a nice solid seat - something with a great shape and with a vintage flair will really take this chair to the next level. You will need to wet newspaper strips as well. Once you clean the chair cover it in moist newspaper strips.
Once the chair is covered in newspaper you will then put a little spray adhesive down and a thin layer of chicken wire so that the moss has something to grab on to.
Section by section, spray a bit of adhesive on the back of each piece of moss and push it onto the damp newspaper/wire. The bigger the piece the moss the better, so it doesn't look pieced together. Instead, it will feel like it has grown from the earth.
Once the entire chair is covered in moss, make sure to water it regularly in order to keep it healthy and growing. You can use a spray bottle or a hose with a spray attachment in order to keep it damp. The newspaper acts as something for the water to soak in, keeping the moss healthy. Use this moss chair as a great sculptural piece in a sunroom, a plant stand outside, or even a functional chair that is also a conversation piece.

Designer Spotlight: Kyle Schuneman

Whether he's designing for interiors, television sets, or as part of a challenge for a show on HGTV, Style, or the DIY Network, designer Kyle Schuneman remains loyal to his company's slogan: "Be You. Live You. Live Well."

I appreciate how Kyle's designs integrate trendy items into comfortable, livable interiors. This young (22-year-old) designer certainly knows his way around small spaces, which are his specialty. While he grew up in Chicago, Kyle is now based out of Los Angeles, where he's worked with companies such as Microsoft, Lipton, and Target. Kyle's style is definitely well-honed already, and I look forward to seeing what this very young designer does in the future years.
