Weird Furniture: Kraft Paper Softseating

Molo's Softseating ($130- $2,390) is made entirely from kraft paper with 50% recycled content. The paper is cut into a honeycomb-like structure that flexes to fan open into stools, benches and loungers. Not only is it flexible, it's versatile and compact; you can compress it like a book for easy storage. It was also recently acquired by the New York MOMA for their permanent collection. I can see the appeal of Softseating in a public space — it's fun, eye-catching, and memorable. But would you want this in your home?

How-To: Remove Candle Wax

There's nothing more romantic than a candlelit dinner, but waking up to a table covered in wax is no picnic. Before you reach for a razorblade that will scratch up your gorgeous dining table, or even think about tossing your tablecloth in the washer, I have some tips for safely and easily removing that candle wax. If the wax has dripped onto a hard surface like a metal, wooden, or glass table, use a blow dryer to melt the wax. As it liquefies, wipe up the melted max with a paper towel or a cotton rag. To hear how to remove wax from your table linens, read more.

Begin by scratching away as much of the wax as you can with a dull knife. Don't pick too hard if you have delicate linens.

Now, lay a piece of newspaper or kraft paper down on your ironing board. Set the waxy portion of your tablecloth on top of that, and then lay down another piece of paper. You can also use a piece of brown paper bag (i.e. lunch bag) for this.

Turn your iron on low-medium and slowly iron over the paper. The paper should absorb the wax as it liquefies. Lift up the paper to check that it's working, and increase the heat and replace the newspaper or kraft paper if necessary.

Next, wash your linens or have them dry cleaned.

Crave Worthy: Woodnotes Newspaper Stand

Nearly everyone could use a little help beautifying her recycling area - I certainly know that mine needs some. That's why this Woodnotes Newspaper Stand ($150) is so perfect. Woodnotes, a Finnish design company, makes this great product out of kraft paper yarn. The simple and streamlined design provides an understated and elegant solution to paper bags in corners or unsightly recycling plastic tubs in the back hallway. Available in beige and white, this stand keeps newspapers and magazines in one spot, and thanks to the removable fabric part, newspapers are easy to take to the recycling point.
Decorating Makeovers Part IV

In my final ode to House Beautiful's 101 Decorating Makeovers, from the February issue, here are some more of my favorite tips for renewing your home with small changes. To see them, just read more.

Go here to see my other favorites, and be sure to pick up a copy of House Beautiful for 80 or so more decorating makeover ideas.

"If your kitchen is cramped, remove your upper cabinets and install open shelving. Just as much storage space, but without the bulk."

"Cover the books in your bookcase with white or brown kraft paper, and write the titles on the jackets with a fountain pen in really personal handwriting."

"Tired of your red coral? Spray it black!"

"Instead of centering one big piece of art over your bed, hang one really small piece. It will have even more impact."

"Rearrange your fireplace mantel. Instead of one candlestick at each end, mass lots of them on one side. Remember: Odd numbers make the best arrangements."

Source and Source

Congratulations to Kmariem, who has won a a set of Yee-Haw Industries' "Flowering Trees of Appalachia" series, which includes hand-carved wood cuts of Dogwood, Magnolia, Paw Paw and Redbud trees. These can be used as cards, but I'd consider framing this series and hanging them together. I have some framed in my own home, and they look great when grouped together. All are letterpress printed in delicate color blends of pink, green and brown ink on recycled white paper and come with recycled kraft envelopes.
