Ask Casa: Kate Walsh's Egg Chairs

Hi Casa!
I need your help. I recently saw Kate Walsh's home in In Style magazine. In her living room there are two egg chairs with a beautiful yet simple print on them. I am obsessed with finding these chairs or something very similar. They are all I think about! Please help. I am moving into my own my place soon and it won't be home unless I find those chairs or something similar.

Hi Erica,

I adore those chairs as well! My best guess is that she had them custom upholstered. The Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair is a classic of modern design, and celebrated its 50th anniversary two years ago. You can buy licensed reproductions of this chair from stores such as Design Within Reach or Hive Modern, but they will cost you upwards of $6,000 apiece.

If you're not averse to buying a knockoff, I'd check out eBay for some choices, such as this custom-made Egg Chair, which comes in a variety of upholstery choices. You might even be able to specify the exact fabric you want. This Egg Chair, also available in custom colors (and perhaps, the exact fabric you are looking for), is also a very good deal, at just under $500 per chair. Again, if you are not opposed to the use of a knockoff, these are good routes to take to get the exact look you want.

Last week, Elka and I traveled across the Bay to explore Old Oakland's popuphood. The brainchild of Sarah Filley and Alfonso Dominguez, popuphood launched in September 2011, using the historically rich but under populated neighborhood of Old Oakland as its guinea pig. Offering small businesses six months of free rent with the goal of having them sign long-term leases, popuphood is slowly filling up vacant storefronts, transforming this sleepy nook into a happening retail destination. How to Be Calorie-Conscious Without Counting Calories

When I first signed up with my personal trainer I also started counting calories to log into a food journal. Three days in, and I realized that I wouldn't be able to maintain it. Counting every calorie not only proved time-consuming, but mind-consuming as well - instead of enjoying what I was eating, I felt like I was thinking more about just how many calories I'd be knocking off my daily limit.

Not everyone has the same experience when they count calories, of course, and many people find that doing so is a simple and effective way to keep their weight in check (Kate Hudson is a fan of counting calories). But if you find that it's too hard, there are many other ways to keep calories in check without feeling like you're obsessing over them.

Choosing slow-digesting fiber-rich fruits and vegetables or whole grain instead of starchy carbs, for one, will help you feel full longer. And portion sizes are important, too. Big, loaded plates mean more calories, so make sure you know what a portion of meat or carbs should really be (learn more about portion sizes here), and use a smaller plate so you're not tempted to overfill. Louis Vuitton Expected to Launch New Perfume

Iconic (and often knocked-off) leather goods brand Louis Vuitton has hired perfumer Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud to come up with its first scent in decades, and now the beauty world is abuzz with speculation about what kind of scent Vuitton will come out with. Cavallier-Belletrud is a third-generation scentmaker from Grasse, France, (perhaps the world's most famed perfume region), and he's the nose behind lots of designer fragrances, including perfumes as diverse as Issey Miyake L'Eau d'Issey, Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, Stella McCartney Stella, and Christian Dior Midnight Poison.

Given Cavallier-Belletrud's varied roster, it might be best to look at Vuitton's head designer, Marc Jacobs, to discern what genre the perfume is likely to fit into. Luckily, Marc already has several fragrances of his own, which tend to skew into the light floral category. Grasse perfumers are also known for their florals (and they're the dominant scent varietal in the current market), so perhaps we'll be looking at something fancy and flowery.
