I love the look of the Sundance Catalog's Midcentury Studio Stool ($245). The varnished raw steel has an understated, industrial look that seems as fitting for a bistro or bar counter as a kitchen or home office. At 27 inches tall and 17 inches wide, they're also a great size - big enough but not too hefty. Unfortunately, if you want someone else to sit at your countertop with you, it'll cost you five Benjamins. Ouch. See a more affordable alternative when you read more.

My lecture hall days may be over, but I'm still loving the industrial schoolhouse aesthetic of this office styled by Canadian magazine editor, stylist, and decorator Margot Austin. From the galvanized metal file cabinet to the linen grain sack pillow, every item seems to have a history. The black/metal desk and sunburst mirrors are a bit more contemporary, which keeps the room from looking too much like a dusty old library. Roundup: The Industrial Age

The juxtaposition of these Factory Vessels ($58-$62) by Up in the Air Somewhere with some fresh, vibrant blooms would make for a wonderful sight. I'd love to create a mini-industrial landscape in my home with these elegant smokestacks. In general, I love the contrast of the rough and gritty with the innocent and delicate. Steal of the Day: Wisteria Aluminum Side Table

I've always been a fan of industrial furnishings, like this vintage peg leg cart, but use too much of them and your home starts to look like a factory. The Wisteria Aluminum Side Table ($165) has an urban, industrial edge, but its polished aluminum makes it a bit more contemporary, and appropriate for my oh-so-avant-garde digs. I think pairing it with natural materials, like the stones here, can even make it work in a more traditional interior. And, its light-reflecting finish will make any space seem larger. What do you think?

Found It! Vintage Industrial Peg Leg Cart

In the next installation of Found It!, I bring you the Vintage Industrial Peg Leg Cart ($799) from American Furnishings. You may have seen this cart used as a coffee table in the boho-modern living room of a couple living in Malmö in my Coveted Crib. In my post, I wrote, "I also adore their coffee table, which looks like a re-purposed dolly (with wheels) of some sort." Apparently, I adored it so much that when I saw decor8 and sfgirlbybay's posts about American Furnishings, I immediately recognized it. American Furnishing's "Vintage Industrial" collection is comprised of "found objects in abandoned factories repurposed into useful everyday items." For example:

Work benches from a decrepit Packard Motor Car plant become a kitchen island. Steel part carts from a General Motors plant in Detroit become rolling liquor cabinets. Long forgotten wooden foundry objects become "high art" when placed on metal stands or hung on a wall. Large metal shoe racks from a foreclosed Ohio factory become book shelves.

The steel Vintage Industrial Peg Leg Cart is said to have been found in Middle America, but no other specifics are given in the product listing. Since the living-room cart lives in Sweden, it'd be interesting to hear about its origins. In another life, before Samantha and Grant found it worthy of their home, where did it come from and how was it used?

Happy 103rd Birthday Eva Zeisel!

World-renowned Hungarian industrial designer Eva Zeisel turns 103 today! Though she is best known for her work with ceramics, Eva, a featured Designer Spotlight here on Casa, has designed everything from acrylic candelabras to wooden and glass coffee tables, and is considered by many to be the matriarch of industrial design.

In fact, New York magazine named Zeisel in its list of nine living Design Revolutionaries back in '07. Better yet, her work is in the permanent collections of museums like the Met, the V&A, and the MoMA, and she received the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York in 2005. Honored with the award at 99 years old, she could have brought closure to her successful career, but she impressively continues to design new works of art today. And while the curves and sensuous shapes of her recent designs are certainly sought after, her earlier pieces remain relevant and stylish, a mark of a truly influential designer. Great Art Online: Yee-Haw Industries

Yee-Haw Industries was established by partners Kevin Bradley & Julie Belcher, who opened up shop from a back-40 barn in Corbin, Kentucky, with salvaged, antique equipment. Their vibrant, folk art, wood cut prints of country music's classic stars, such as Hank Williams, Sr. and Loretta Lynn, caught eyes and told stories. Soon, modern music acts, including Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and Southern Culture on the Skids began commissioning promotional posters and album art. In 1998, having outgrown the bluegrass barn, Yee-Haw moved to Knoxville, where they offer tours of the Yee-Haw studio in action and maintain a store to sell their wares.

Yee-Haw's work has been honored by selection to PRINT Magazine's Regional Design Annual for seven years running and has been reviewed and featured by The Washington Post, AIGA Journal, Fortune Small Business, Southern Living, Esquire, American Illustration 21, and was recently published in The Art of Modern Rock, the Poster Explosion. Yee-Haw has done fine illustration, as well as design and letterpress, for clients such as RRL-Ralph Lauren, The American Visionary Art Museum, MTV2, and the Cartoon Network. The studio has recently collaborated with the National Gallery of Art to design & produce a unique line of Dada merchandise, available exclusively at the National Gallery for the duration of the 2006 Dada exhibition.
