Cool Idea: Re-Imagining Cardboard Boxes

Su Casa member Bromeliad could've simply recycled this cardboard box, but she saw hidden potential in its boring exterior. She explains, "This is a simple and inexpensive project I made using a cardboard box, doublesided tape and highlighter markers."

Bromeliad printed out an image of ikat that fit the size of her box, traced the shape, and colored it in. Using doublesided tape, she wrapped the cardboard box with the "ikat." What a cool, cheap transformation! Get all of the directions here.

Crave Worthy: Vivre Round Ikat Ottoman

Combining my love of ikat and my affection for poufs, the Vivre Round Ikat Ottoman ($2,100) is utterly unique, not to mention fun. It looks to me like this ottoman is embroidered, so it's actually faux ikat, but who cares? Its fiery orange squiggles and cute shape have me hooked. It's a nice option for extra seating, or as a foot rest. But I'd suggest taking your shoes off before you ruin its white-linen fabric; that's one purchase you don't want to replace. I say someone otto buy it.

Try This Week's Casa Craving Challenge!

Okay, so I think we've pretty much established that I have a love for everything ikat. These chairs then, are of course no exception. This set of 4 Napoleon III side chairs (circa 1860) have ebonized wood frames and upholstered in sumptuous handmade silk Ikat fabric. And they'll cost a pretty penny, too: The dealer is selling them for $5,200.

Let's say that an incredibly generous friend just gifted you this set of fabulous chairs. What are you going to surround them with?

Etsy Find: Ikat Table Runner

If you hadn't noticed that I'm obsessed with Ikat, let me wave the Ikat flag once again. Last time, it was placemats, and now I'm back with a beautiful Ikat table runner by Mimosa, who picked up the fabric when she lived in Uzbekistan. Not only is the fabric to-dye-for, but the Moroccan hand-crocheted buttons along the edges (which are found on the garments worn by men and women in Central Asia) add charm and tradition. I'd love to design a holiday table around this elegant rouge color! You like?

Steal of the Day: Ikat Napkins & Placemats

It kind of cracks me up that Ballard Designs refers to their discounted inventory as part of an "Estate Sale." I'm sure their "estate" is a steel-walled warehouse in Ohio somewhere. But, since they're selling steals like these Ikat Napkins ($25) and Placemats ($40), I couldn't care less where they've been storing their goods. I love the grosgrain ribbon details and the blue and raspberry color schemes. They're also are totally scratching my ikat itch.
