Twitter user DefDulce asked me a question which, judging from current trends, I think is on a lot of young decorators' minds: "How can you turn an ordinary apartment into an old Hollywood starlet pad?"

Without seeing her apartment, I can't offer specific, tailored changes or updates. So I thought I'd respond by offering a few key elements essential to any old Hollywood home. Choosing just a few of them will give your home that overtone of glitz and glamour so evocative of Old Hollywood style.

Lacquer your furniture! And if you can't afford to, high gloss paint will do.
Choose rich materials like silk and velvet for drapery and tablecloths.
Bring in luxe details: crystals on chandeliers, fringe on lampshades, gilt accessories.

October's Vogue Features Kelly Wearstler's Hollywood Home

Since so many of you have a love it or hate it relationship with designer Kelly Wearstler's unique style, I figured that you'd be interested in taking a tour of her Hollywood mansion. Good news - now you can.

The October issue of Vogue includes a special feature on interior designer Kelly Wearstler’s Hollywood mansion, gorgeously photographed by Francois Halard with a profile penned by Hamish Bowles. Definitely head over to Vogue for the complete tour, and also check out the outtakes, which are only available online.

There are definitely some fascinating facts to be learned, such as her scrupulously color-coded shoes and vintage hats collections, and her use of color (cerulean blue) and pattern (faux crocodile) in her young sons' bedrooms. I know that I find Kelly Wearstler absolutely fascinating (and fabulous), and this Vogue profile only reinforces that impression.

Coveted Crib: A Bright and Beautiful West Hollywood Condo

Blending modern and vintage décor, Hollywood, CA, interior designer Michelle Workman used a green and white color palette to create a bright, clean, and inspiring home look for her Connecticut transplant client. The client's traditional pieces were incorporated into the new design and given California flair.

Michelle explains,

[The client] wanted to change the look she had from back East. She wanted white walls and white furniture, but the rest was up to me! With all of the new furnishings, I went with a modern shape so that the only traditional shapes would be from her previous home. The result was bright, cool, and crisp, yet entirely welcoming. We also gutted the kitchen, which had been very traditional, but without any joie de vivre. The result was a simple, clean space with a splash of ornamentation in the hardware.

Get the Look: Brüno at the Roosevelt Hotel

I just watched Digg's Dialogg with Brüno, which took place in Hollywood's Roosevelt Hotel. I couldn't help but notice the set's hip modern décor, and being the Brüno lover that I am, I thought I'd take the chance to help you get the look of this hilarious scene. The chrome floor lamp with three arched eyeball-like shades is a 1970s Italian classic, likely vintage. You'll see lots of variations on this design, with fewer or more arches, as well as table lamps and suspension lights, if you search "chrome floor lamp" on eBay and online auction houses like 1st Dibs.
In 1st Dibs' current selection, this set of Two 1970s Italian Floor Lamps ($3,950) are your closest matches. But, the Tri-Fixture Chrome Floor Lamp ($1,200) offers a similar look.

Inspired: Jean Harlow

Film actress Jean Harlow was America's sex symbol of the 1930s. Also known as the "Platinum Blonde" and the "Blonde Bombshell," this glamorous, gorgeous woman embodied Hollywood glamour. Starring in such films as Red Dust and Platinum Blonde, she appeared onscreen beside leading men Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, and James Cagney.

This actress, whose personal life was marked by tragedy, was absolutely magnetic onstage and onscreen, and the immense force of her personality is still evident today, with stars such as Gwen Stefani emulating her look (Stefani, in fact, played Harlow in The Aviator). And of course, we know what Nicole Ritchie named her little girl. As a small homage to this glamorous woman, I thought I'd put together a Hollywood-Harlow-worthy look.

I kept the color palette simple, emphasizing whites and silvers, while laying down a cool, deep blue wool rug, which would ground the room. With a splash of teal in the pillows, which picks up on the soothing blue tone, the rest of the room is left to shine with mirrors, chandelier, silver, and white tufted leather sofa and ottoman. I also added a few elements from the animal world, including an elephant side table and a silver stag antler wall hanging. Jean Harlow was nothing if not a fighter, and I wanted these more "wild" elements to translate her amazing spirit.

Ben Stiller Meets the Market

Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor have put their 10-bedroom, 11-bath Hollywood Hills compound on the market for a cool $12.5 million.

The 1929 Spanish-style spread includes two houses and a one-bedroom guest house on an acre of lushly landscaped grounds. It boasts beautiful terracotta tiles and colorful inlays, a magnificent pool, an outdoor dining and living area with built-in seating, French doors, three fireplaces, six garage bays, hardwood flooring, and naturally, a home theater. The house looks flawless and is a great example of a California hacienda-style home. But what really impresses me is the property's privacy. Los Angeles has plenty of homes over $10 million sitting on a mere acre, and it baffles me that people would pay so much to live so close to their neighbors. Coveted Crib: Kate Walsh's Lovely LA Home

Kate Walsh's 1920s Spanish-style Los Angeles home is featured in this month's issue of InStyle, and I'm blown away by how glamorously laid-back it is. While elements like a Steinway grand piano, lush fur throws, and a 1960s Lucite console offer that prim Old Hollywood look you see in many celebrity homes, there is something really layered and livable about it that I found unusual. Turns out, Walsh eschewed her usual interior designer route and hired the set decorator of Private Practice, Melissa Levander, to put the space together. Come take the tour!

This Just In: Dido Sells Her House in Hollywood Hills

According to Big Time, Dido has sold her three-bedroom, 3,739-square-foot home in the Hollywood Hills "for an undisclosed price after it had been on the market for $4.6 million." She paid $4.15 million in September 2005 for the property. According to listing information, the house boasts:

A Hollywood Regency-style living room with a fireplace and views of the pool and grounds, a media room that also has views, a large dining room with French doors, a remodeled kitchen, and a large master suite with sitting areas, a gym, large closets, and a marble bathroom.

It also, "has two additional bedroom suites and sits on a 0.46-acre parcel that contains a large motor court." And, records show that her real name is Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle O’Malley Armstrong! To see images of the digs, read more.
