Stylist and owner of the London interiors shop Caravan Emily Chalmers and her husband Chris bought a 40-year-old Citroën H van off of eBay for about $4,000 and turned it into a spare room as an extension of their home. The simple, front-wheel drive delivery van had originally been a Parisian mortician's vehicle but has been converted to include a wardrobe, wash basin, gas stove, fireplace, and a seat that turns into a bed. With her keen design sense, Emily gave the van, originally all yellow inside, a makeover by lining the table and doorway with crochet edging and laying a woven plastic mat on the floor.

I may just be speaking for myself here, but I think for most of us (despite good intentions), the new year is a time of failed resolutions. Sad, but true. Such is not the case for H&M, which will embark on a new venture in early 2009, making its foray into the arena of interiors with a range of home textiles and accessories.

According to FabSugar, Finnish textile design company Marimekko will be "lending its signature vivid prints and colors to H&M's Spring '08 collection," and I hear even Manolo Blahnik is taking a cue from Marimekko's bold patterns. Also, Anthropologie has created its own crave worthy upholstered furniture with the textiles. Since the textile industry is often responsible for trends in both the home décor and fashion worlds, I suspect you'll soon be longing for some Marimekko in your life.

If you remember my post on soil pH readings, you'll know that the color of a hydrangea is determined by the pH of the soil. One pH reading creates pink flowers and one creates blue flowers. Since these flowers are blue, do you know what the soil's pH must be?

Turning leaves, golden grassy fields, and frost-crisped trees all help me to get into the Autumn spirit. But why leave that inspiration outside in the cold? Instead, transfer those colors to the coziest room in your house: the bedroom.

For the last eight years, Architectural Digest has had the unique pleasure of choosing a designer to design the green room for the Primetime Emmy Awards, which accommodates performers and speakers when they are not on stage. This year the magazine chose award-winning Los Angeles-based designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, who has worked for the likes of Cher, Ed Norton, Christina Aguilera, William H. Macy, and Sir Elton John, among other famous faces.

One of my favorite designers, Robert Austin Gonzalez, who we highlighted in a recent Designer Spotlight, has a piece featured on this month's cover of California Home + Design.
The 4Lcombo dining table from his Grace Collection can be spotted on the cover of their current issue. Also shown in the accompanying magazine story is Gonzalez's T/Sgothic stool and side table in oak.

While I'm all for living small and beautifully, sometimes my curiosity gets the better of me, and I wonder what it would be like to live large — really, really large. In reality I have no interest in living in a house much larger than 1,800 square feet. It's just too much upkeep for me, not to mention the environmental cost of living in a big house.
