Etsy Finds: Gray and Yellow Artwork

Since I wrote my slideshows on how to decorate with gray and with yellow, I've been on a major gray and yellow kick, and I'm considering using those colors in a palette for one of my rooms. So as a start, I thought I'd see what gray and yellow artwork is out there. Obviously having more than two colors in a painting or a print will give it more depth and visual interest, so it's not limited to just these hues! Let's take a look.

Coveted Crib: Julianne Moore's West Village Townhouse

You may remember Julianne Moore's living room, which was featured in Domino, and which she actually designed herself. That's right: the girl's got talent that extends beyond the silver screen and into her silver sitting room! Proof of that design skill set is Moore's very own West Village townhouse, which is on the market for $12 million.

The late 1800s home has been meticulously renovated, retaining original architectural details like crown moldings and wide plank floors, but was updated with the latest modern amenities. Moore chose my favorite color as of late - gray - as a base for several rooms. Overall, the rooms look well-traveled (heavy on the Japanese designs), a bit rustic, and comfortably polished. Who knows where she's moving, but suspicion tells me she's looking for another design project. Prepare to salivate when you see photos . . .

Get the Look: Call Me Mellow Yellow and Gray

I wrote about the pale yellow and gray trend nearly two years ago, but baby's still got a hold on me. I spotted this subtle living room in Homes and Gardens, and couldn't help but want to scratch everything in my own digs and re-create this look.Naturally, the Ligne Roset sofa and the B&B Italia Fat Fat - Lady Fat Table make the room all the more crave worthy, but the palette is really what makes me swoon. The room has a mostly white and pale gray background with small punches of yellow and some black elements to balance out the pastel. Roundup: Grays With Blue and Purple Undertones

As you can tell from my recent paint job, I'm really loving grays with blue/purple undertones. I guess I'd consider it a mix of sapphire, amethyst, and slate. I went for a big dose of the hue with Benjamin Moore's Amethyst Shadow on my walls, but I wouldn't mind bringing home some more of the color. So, I decided to scout out my favorite shops for this latest color pick. The shade turned up on everything from vases and bowls to bedding and rugs, and even furniture and lighting. Etsy Find: Appetite Home Fern Pillow

It's been a while since the pale yellow and gray trend made its debut, but the color pairing hasn't lost its appeal on me. I'd be a proud lioness if this Appetite Home White Yellow and Grey Fern Pillow ($28) were mine. Not only is its palette utterly delightful, but it's pared-down, nature-inspired print is simple and versatile. It's also printed with nontoxic inks, which I appreciate. I could easily build a calm space around this design . . . just add some original art, a few reclaimed wood elements, and perhaps a gray twill sofa. Want to see more fern motifs? Get the Look: Gray's Anatomy

The color gray has been calling my name these days, so I want to sing its praises in return. While the color does naturally make a perfect neutral — half-way between white and black! — it can also be bold if you use a lot of it all at once. Since it's so subdued, it doesn't have the same visual offensiveness that, say, mixing several shades of pink would. Because entirely gray rooms are few and far between, it's enchanting to stumble into one.I recommend mixing varying shades of gray, as well as different textures and patterns to add interest. Then, throw in some mercury glass, mirrors, and silver elements to add shimmer. Try gray on different material as well: metal, wood, glass, and textiles. Midday Muse: A Place For Grays

While not one of the paint colors I immediately gravitate towards, gray can have an immediate and dramatic effect. I love how stunning it looks here, as a background to this romantically red velvet sofa.

Before and After: Banksy v. the Gray Ghost

If you read my roundup of alternative graffiti, you know about satiric, prolific, and pseudo-anonymous British graffiti artist Banksy, and also about Fred Radtke, the Gray Ghost, who has been painting over graffiti throughout New Orleans with gray paint since 1997. Although I lumped them both into one category of "alternative graffiti," the motivation behind it for the two is not the same. For Bansky, the medium is a venue for making political, cultural, and ethical statements, while Radtke considers his graywashing more of a public service, referred to as "Operation Clean Sweep." Not only do they differ in the end to their means, but Banksy actually recently took it upon himself to battle the Gray Ghost on his home turf. Above is an image of a wall in New Orleans, which was painted over in gray by Radtke, as it had been marked with graffiti. Banksy's caption reads:

I came to New Orleans to do battle with the Gray Ghost, a notorious vigilante who's been systematically painting over any graffiti he can find with the same shade of grey paint since 1997. Consequently he's done more damage to the culture of the city than any section five hurricane could ever hope to achieve.

I must say, I agree with Banksy. If you consider graffiti an art form or a statement, isn't Radtke wiping out something of cultural and communicational value? If you consider it vandalism, isn't he eliminating a measure of the city's state of being and health? How can the issues related to vandalism be solved without evidence of the vandalism itself? If a home's exterior is white and it is splotched with gray, doesn't it still look tarnished? Tell me your thoughts!

Casa Craving Recap: Pink and Gray Palette

I had style on the brain last week during Spring Fashion Week in New York, so for the latest Casa Craving challenge, I decided to use some inspiration from the DKNY runway show.

These colors are really close to the Gypsy Pink and Rockport Gray shades from Benjamin Moore's 2008 Color Trends Report, so your challenge was to design a pink and gray bedroom using this palette.

This was a tough one, but the best rooms pulled off the color combo by going sleek and modern rather than too teeny-boppers. You can see all of the pink and gray Casa Cravings here, as well as the 10 great lists the users created. (TeamSugar has a great tutorial on listmaking if you're not sure how.) Here are a few of my favorites.

Look #1, designed by CocoChic, who says her room is all about glamor: "I kept the palette simple with gray, pink, black, and white. The mirrored tray and Victoria ghost chair add a sense of an old dressing room. The rug is made of FLOR tiles so it can be rearranged at the drop of a hat. Finally, the lamps, bedside tables, and dresser accessories give off a little sparkle."

Look #2, designed by Ejmcmis, who went for a mix of glam and mod, with understated silver curtains, a sophisticated but funky pink chandelier, and black wooden furniture.

Look #3, designed by Jackieos, who calls her bedroom "Chic and timeless. Youthful but classic. Fun yet glamorous. The pink and gray wallpaper sets the tone for all the other hot pinks and grays: silk drapes, bedding, mirrored furniture, 'ghost' style accessories, and a fun rainbow-dipped jeweled chandelier."
