Weird Furniture: Globus

Although I've been feeling globe shapes lately, I must say the Michiel van der Kley Globus ($8,775) is one big piece of weird furniture. It is described as a "compact personal mobile workstation," but is basically a desk and and chair on wheels in a big white ball. Its rotating chair and pull-out table top are revealed when you crack open its globe shape, and you can close it up and roll it away if you want to work in another room. Honestly, I think a laptop is a much more versatile "workstation," and they don't look like something out of Barbarella or Google Zurich. What do you think? I generally don't think of myself as much of a traditionalist, but I guess I'm making an exception for the Globus.

Global warming is certainly nothing to be happy about, but I am feeling globe shapes lately. I guess I've moved beyond those trendy circles into a new dimension: the third dimension. Looking at all of these fabulous spherical products, I've begun to wonder why everything isn't globe shaped. Think about how many delightful things take on the form: jawbreakers, snowglobes, citrus, fish-eye lenses, the Superdome, M.C. Escher's masterpiece, and balls of all sorts. Maybe Shakespeare was on to something.

Do You Know Anyone With a Snow-Globe Collection?

I feel like there are so many movies where characters collect snow globes, but in real life I've never met such a collector. I saw this collection in the home of Martin Jacobs and Simon Pearce, which was featured on The Selby. It's a pretty extensive reserve, isn't it? Do you know any snow-globe collectors?

Obama Buys $4,800 Recycled Chandelier For Daughters' White House Bedroom

In last night's episode of Man Shops Globe, Keith Johnson traveled to South Africa, where he was on the hunt for not-so-typical African crafts. After stumbling upon some unusual pottery and a handmade wooden dining chair straight out of a Van Gogh painting, he wandered into a magical art collective shop called Magpie , which sells knickknacks and décor made entirely from recycled objects. Be it a lid to a dog food can, a wine cork, or a Barbie, the eco-conscious craftsman turned the disposable into the extraordinary. Johnson was blown away by a tall, dramatic chandelier made from found objects, trinkets, and castoffs, and ordered one for Anthropologie.

As it turns out, President Obama bought the $4,800 recycled chandelier for Sasha and Malia's bedroom in the White House. We did learn back in January that the Obamas planned to decorate the girls' room with Pottery Barn and Anthropologie, and that they already have a large collection of African and Asian art, so it's quite fitting actually! While the purchase is certainly expensive for young girls, as is the family's celebrity decorator Michael Smith, Barack and Michelle did decide to pay for their White House renovations personally, and forgo the allotted $100,000 presidential decorating budget, so you can't blame them!

Casa Craving Challenge: Golden Glamour

With the Golden Globe Awards coming up this Sunday, I have the color gold on my brain.

With that in mind, I'm concentrating this week's Casa Craving Challenge on finding gold-colored home décor. So for this challenge, I'd like you to bookmark lamps, vases, rugs, and whatever else you find, that's gold-toned. You can find metallic accents or textiles that are simply gold-colored, but whatever you find, make sure it's something stunning. Crave Worthy: Juliska Globe Pendant Lamp

With its spiny protrusions and round body, it could be a cross between a beach-washed shell and a sea anemone. Though now, instead of hiding under the current, the shape has been reimagined for your home, to hang above a table or elegant foyer space.

Made by Juliska, this pendant has been mouthblown by Prague-area artisans using the same technique that's been passed down for generations, allowing the glass to be extremely thin. Each comes with a six-foot chrome chain and takes a 120-watt bulb (though I, of course, would suggest switching it out for a CFL).
