Guess Which President's Son Lived Here?

The only child to survive into adulthood of one of America's most prominent presidents built this Georgian Revival Summer home on 500 acres of land in Manchester, VT, at the turn of the 20th century. It was home to only his descendants until 1975, when it was purchased by a historical society; today, it lives on as a museum, preserving the family legacy. On the Market: Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates's Restored Revolutionary War Georgian Colonial

It's always interesting to see how the other side lives but, in many cases, the celebrity homes you see are underwhelming, cookie-cutter LA mansions. As for this restored Revolutionary War Georgian colonial recently listed by Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates, I'd consider it a coveted crib even if one half of history's most successful music duos didn't sleep in it. Beyond its good looks, there's much more of a story behind these digs than the "unparalleled views" and "updated appliances" of those California cribs.The Dutchess County, NY, property, known as Flint Hill, is actually two museum-quality homes that once belonged to Revolutionary War captains, and have since been joined through a beamed living area with a fireplace. The 6,363-square-foot home, four-bedroom, five-and-two-half-bath home has 24 rooms, nine fireplaces, four guesthouses, an indoor pool, and a pergola.

Hall himself took on the project of having these homes painstakingly restored. One was built in 1771, the other in 1780, and they initially sat on different properties. After moving them together, he discovered that by coincidence they were connected to the same family. Now, this architectural tour de force sits on a 245-plus acre estate with 100-mile views of the Catskills, ponds, old apple orchards, stone walls, farm roads, gardens, and a Neolithic firepit. Madonna Wants to Re-Create Her Former English Manor in NYC

Since her split with Guy Ritchie, Madonna has parked herself in an Upper East Side apartment, moving on from their shared historic estate in Wiltshire, UK, the Ashcombe House. But, according to the Mirror, she misses the English countryside so much that she's asked her architects to re-create her country home room by room in her NYC digs. Let me add that the Mirror is not always the most reliable source, so this news bit still has rumor status.Apparently, she's hired people "to go out and troll the Upper East Side boutiques for candelabras, side tables, and period chaises" and even had the wood floors of her new Georgian-style townhouse "ripped up and replaced with terracotta tiles, similar to Ashcombe." There's even talk of bringing chickens into the Manhattan pad to make her kids feel at home - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that might be stretching the truth. Nevertheless, do you understand where she is coming from? Would you do (or have you done) the same thing? Or do you think she's nuts and should decorate like she lives in Gotham City, not the English countryside?

Need some space to spread out in San Francisco? Then check out this four-level home in the Pacific Heights neighborhood. The home has already dropped a few million dollars over a few weeks, and is currently offered for $9,995,000. While this is likely way out of most of our buying ranges, it's still fun to window shop.

The Georgian home's exterior features neo-classical ornamentation and a red brick façade. Over the home's four levels you'll find formal living and dining rooms, breakfast and family rooms, five to seven bedrooms, five baths and two half baths, fireplaces, a study, a wine cellar, and in true SF style, a "meditation room" (formally an au pair's quarters). Outside, you can drool over the gorgeous views from the garden roof deck, or dine al fresco on the terrace or near the rose garden. If you're tired of taking the stairs, you can also take the elevator.

This home was designed and built 99 years ago by architect Nathaniel Blaisdell, who designed numerous homes in this neighborhood. It was selected for the 2009 Decorator Showcase, a fundraising event for San Francisco High School, and the photos reflect the different styles of the designers chosen to decorate each room. Coveted Crib: Black and White and Modern All Over

I love too many colors and styles to ever go only black, white, and modern, but I applaud he who has the restraint (and the balls) to do it. I spotted this large Georgian house in Tetbury, a small town in - believe it or not - the Cotswolds, and was blown away. Short of a dab of yellow paint in some artwork and its plush green lawn, the house is all black, white, and gray, and each room is essentially either entirely black or white. This makes matching oh so easy! Is that a cop-out? Beyond that, low-slung, stream-lined furnishings rule, and some modern classics like cowhide rugs and Arne Jacobsen Egg Chairs and glitzy elements like crystal chandeliers and tufted furniture are spattered throughout. It's a very powerful space that's not necessarily what I would personally create for my own home, but I'd kill to stay over a few nights. See more photos and chime in when you read more.

Midday Muse: Front Door Fun

I spotted this hallway look over at House to Home and was impressed with the statement the rich coordinating reds make. Most don't take into account the color of their front door when decorating the foyer, but it speaks wonders! The hallway of this 18th century Georgian house is otherwise quite simple, but its neutral backdrop and matching color palette allow for its original features to shine.

Obviously, if you rent, painting your front door to match your decor palette is often out of the picture. But for those of you who own, it's worth thinking about. Would you ever paint your interiors to match your front door?

President Bush Buys a Post-White House House

As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to move into the White House, President Bush has picked up some new property for his life post-1600 Penn, when he leaves office in January. George and Laura have ponied up for a 8,501-square-foot, four-bedroom, ranch-style home in Preston Hollow, a wealthy North Dallas neighborhood where they lived before he became governor of Texas in 1995. I guess George is saying goodbye to the Georgian style.Preston Hollow counts some other prominent residents, including Dallas mayor Tom Leppert, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, former Dallas Cowboys Roger Staubach and Chuck Howley, and billionaire investors Harold Simmons and T. Boone Pickens, among others, so the Bush family should feel right at home, and perhaps their new neighbors won't be starstruck. The word on the sale price is that the property sold for "considerably more" than its $2.1 million appraisal price. There's also rumor that the couple is under contract to purchase an adjacent home, which they may tear down, use for an office, or for secret service. To see photos of that property, read more.
