Cool Idea: Floating Bookshelves Framed

Invisible Floating Shelves ($13.95) have become a popular purchase among modern design enthusiasts for the minimalism they offer. While I do like how the shelf itself is concealed, sometimes having the visual weight of wood is an easy way to create a focal point. So I like how Su Casa member SoCalSugar used an old frame that she picked up at the Rose Bowl flea market to give her books some body. It gives her shelving instant intrigue, and addresses the age old question, "What is art?"

Have you joined my Su Casa group yet? Show off your home updates, big or small, like SoCalSugar did!

Su Casa: Ndchristine's Smartly Arranged Frames

After moving into an old farmhouse a few months ago, Su Casa member ndchristine and her husband have slowly been updating the place, as time and money allows. I love how she has hung the frames behind her television. The organic arrangement works with the low placement of the TV, rather than fighting it - as a single, large frame or painting hung above it would. She's also balanced the frames to the right of TV with a set of candlesticks to the left. So chic and perfectly imperfect! I also LOVE her kilim rug that's peeking out there; what a good find. Have you made any changes to your home recently? Be sure to post them to our Su Casa group!

Casa Quickie: Hang It Diagonally

It's a dream to curate a personal collection of original art, but it's not always in the budget. Sometimes, though, just the frame you use to hang something or the way it's hung is visually intriguing enough that what's behind the glass is of little consequence. Artists, designers, and art directors Jonathan and Annie Zawada made the most of a simple drawing by hanging it diagonally in their Sydney home, photographed by Todd Selby. The sketch itself isn't particularly arresting or bold, but the atypical way it's hung makes it eye-catching. Maybe framing a simple doodle, an old love letter, or the like and hanging it 45 degrees off will be just the thing to hold you over until you can afford to bid on originals at Sotheby's. P.S. How rad is that matchstick floor lamp?
Source

Guess What's Inside This Frame?

Love It or Hate It? Empty Frames

But, I'm not sure how great they'd look if the mantel weren't arranged just so, and the dining table weren't unusually dressed with vases and a lamp. I think it might look the homeowner hadn't finished a framing project.
Steal of the Day: Ruffle Frame Shelf

Especially a beautiful one that's on sale. The Brocade Home Ruffle Frame Shelf ($199, reduced from $299) is my kind of shelf. White. Ornate. Feminine. And wood, to boot. The great thing is that even if you're displaying a plastic toy horse or a fortune cookie (i.e. not something particularly chic), the frame shelf will do all the glamorous work. Even a note from a creditor will look sexy on this baby . . . let's just hope you don't have any of those.

Cool Idea: Door Panes Become Picture Frames

My grandmother was the ultimate creative, painfully chic and actually an interior designer herself. So, it didn't come as a surprise when she revamped this French door in her living room (which leads to a rarely used closet), using it to frame black-and-white family photos. She had mattes made to border each photo, or each arrangement of photos, and placed them behind the glass door panes. Then, she had a piece of plywood cut to size, and secured to the door to keep it all in place. It was the sort of great idea that needed to be well executed to succeed, and I think it did. The fact that she used black-and-white family photographs made it all the more nostalgic, timeless, and cohesive. Somehow I don't think color photographs would triumph there. What do you think?

Cool Idea: Lego Frame

He created a catalog featuring instructions on how to customize Lego blocks to make useful products like iPod cases, picture frames, and coffee mugs. I'm keen on his Lego frame. It looks like a cinch to make with some glue, a basic cardboard or wood frame, and of course, Legos. I think I'm going to raid my mother's attic next time I head home; I know she's got all my old toys stashed away as keepsakes. This isn't the first time I've seen Legos reenvisioned, though: remember my post on Kitchen Legos? Oh, what a little imagination can build . . .
Steal of the Day: Flowers Cut Out Metal Frame

Perhaps the design of the Urban Outfitters Flowers Cut Out Metal Frame ($9.99) is a tad too feminine for most with its curvy cutouts and florals, but its sleek black enameled metal frame gives it rockstar edge. And there's nothing indulgent about its price. So if you're a hip chick with self portraits to frame, maybe this is for you.

Of course, I told her I'd love to see her frame, and she posted a photo to the Su Casa group. While her husband was at work, KateDavis hung one of her husband's paintings on their wall and drew an ornate frame around it with a Sharpie. Check out KateDavis's post to learn why her husband may have been less than thrilled to see his work so prominently displayed. It's hard to see the markered pièce de résistance very well in this photo, but it looks like KateDavis has some artistic talent of her own! It also reminds me a lot of Graham & Brown's Frames wallpaper, don't you think?
