I've long loved the Ikea Hemnes Four-Poster Bed, and while I love the composition of this room, I'm not so sold on the half-painted bed. What's your take? Source

Every once in awhile, I encounter a furnishing that literally blows my mind. That time is now. The Conran Shop Ball Poster Bed ($17,000) is dramatic, unorthodox, and downright eye catching. This exclusive Conran Shop design reinterprets a traditional, unassuming four-poster bed with burnt- and waxed-ash balls stacked to create posters, completely stealing the show. I'd love to see it against an accent wall with patterned wallpaper like Ferm's Waldots, although it speaks volumes in any setting. Do you love it?

DIY: Canopy Headboard

You needn't buy a $19,000 four-poster to get the look of a romantic canopy bed. A few supplies and a spare afternoon and your bedroom will be fit for a queen, without the stuffy price tag. And, if that's not good enough for you, I'll show you how to live like a modern Marie Antoinette. This canopy headboard DIY, from Point Click Home, is easy enough for a neophyte crafter, but chic enough for the DIY maestro. Also, check out this post for another DIY headboard.

Supplies:

10" faux willow leaf wreath (or a tool wreath for the dudes)
Spray paint (white, gold, or silver)
2 yards 1" wide ribbon
Scissors
2 safety pins
2 sheer curtain panels
1 large nail
Hammer

Here are the steps, from Point Click Home:

Lay the wreath down on newspaper outside.
Spray paint the wreath for an antiqued or frosted look, and let it dry.
Cut the ribbon into two separate one yard lengths (in half).
Pin a safety pin to the end of one length of ribbon, and slide it through the rod pocket of one of the curtain panel, gathering as you go.
Repeat using the other safety pin, ribbon length, and curtain panel.
Hide the ribbon from one panel between the leaves, tying it around the lower edge of the wreath.
Repeat with the other panel.
Trim off any excess ribbon.
Find the center of the wall, about four to six feet above your bed, and pencil it.
Hammer the nail into the wall.
Hang the wreath on the wall, and arrange the panels so that they wrap around the sides of your bed. Fini!

Trend Alert: Light and Airy Canopy Beds

As a kid, I always fantasized about having a canopy bed, and ever since I spotted the Creme Fresh Celeste Bed, I've discovered that there are plenty of canopy beds for grown-ups too. But these dreamy canopies aren't the imposing four-posters of old. The big trend is in light and airy canopy beds made from sleek metal, slender wood, and sculpted wrought iron for a look that's both romantic and modern.

Coveted Crib: Catherine's Parisian Sanctuary

Catherine from Mill Valley, CA, was recently chosen as the Domino Decorating Contest winner. A single mother, Catherine had to wait 17 years before converting two smaller bedrooms into her large master bedroom. This handy lady completed the demolition herself, then hired workers to install closets, floor, and doorways. All of the stenciling, painting, embossing, and glazing was completed by Catherine, who wanted to create "a Parisian-like sanctuary to enjoy after a long working day."

I'm so happy that Catherine was chosen as the winner-I'd been rooting for her! I love her sophisticated use of color, can-do take on home decorating, and eye for lovely details. The gorgeous bed was, according to Catherine, found at a very low price at a major department store. Originally a dark brown four-poster bed, she sawed off the posts, painted it white, and topped the corners with curtain rod finials she silver leafed.

Crave Worthy: Valois Canopy Bed

Spotted on AT:SF, the Niermann Weeks Valois Canopy Bed ($19,330) is pure luxury. Made of Venetian silver leaf with antiqued mirrored panels, it's more feminine boudoir than art deco design, and it's yet another reason to love mirrored furniture. Fit for a queen, for yours truly, or just anyone with 20 Gs to spare, it more than qualifies as Crave Worthy. I particularly love its icy gray-blue headboard; I wonder what material it's made of. Can't you see Princess Anne from Roman Holiday taking a snooze in this four-poster?

Robert Verdi's Top Five Fall Trends

This week's Life & Style magazine checks in with celebrity home-style guru Robert Verdi to get his top five home trends for Fall. With the exception of animal prints - will they ever stop making a comeback? - I'm really excited about all of these looks, especially the yellow accessories.

The Life & Style spreads also features some other must haves; I'm really loving the cheerful citrine Anthroplogie Backyard Wine Glass. Here are Verdi's five Fall trends to watch.

Animal-print pillows and area rugs add a sexy but tasteful touch.
Organic wood baskets are great for stylish storage!
Yellow accessories, like lamp shades and candles, brighten up any room.
Lacquer is chic in small doses and very trendy for fall. Think breakfast trays, vases, vanities, and end tables.
It's all about upholstered headboards, which look softer than four-poster beds.

Love It or Hate It? CB2 Indie Bed

CB2's Indie Bed is a good buy at just $499, but I think the unconventional four-poster design looks weird without a headboard, a footboard, or a canopy. Also, does anyone else find it ironic that a chain store - given, a chain I like very much - is selling a product called the Indie?
