A Sugar staffer asked me the name of the yellow flowers in this image from my Etsy Finds: Votive Holders post. So I thought I'd quiz you all and see if you know it. Just a hint: the ones shown are dried flowers and they are pretty bright yellow in daylight.

This handsome, finger-like, purple plant is native to Europe, western and central Asia, and northwestern Africa. It's often grown ornamentally in the US, though, due to its beautiful blooms. Although it may be a beauty queen, it's also a toxic plant that can potentially cause death, so beware! Can you name this plant?

This flower grows on a vine and produces a similarly named fruit. Its leaves and roots have been used for medicinal purposes for hundreds of years.

Su Casa: Sunny Days and Beautiful Blooms

Su Casa member Jessamae22 posted awe-inspiring photos of her sunflower garden. Even though we're bidding the warm weather goodbye, it's good to know that other gardeners are still enjoying their Summer flowers. The photos she took are absolutely stunning, and besides a green thumb, it seems as if Jessamae22 also possesses an artist's eye.

She says, "I have a special spot in my heart for sunflowers . . . they were the first flower that I ever grew from seed. Granted, they are considered pretty easy to grow, but it's still so cool to see just how quickly they sprout and turn into gorgeous blooms! This summer, since we now have a house (!!), I designated a little patch out back for my 'field of sunflowers.' I raked up the dirt, and sprinkled in three different varieties. Not much later, I had my own little sunny spot!"

Etsy Find: Open Tulip Serving Platter

Considering that it's August, the tulips in your garden have likely already come and gone. But that doesn't mean you can't still enjoy them! The Gleena Shop Open Tulip Serving Platter ($55) is just the thing to keep Spring eternal (you know how I love endless seasons). The asymmetrical platter is slip-cast porcelain, embellished with a delicate open tulip decal, and glazed on the inside only. It's food and dishwasher safe, but personally I'd just love to use it as wall décor. Ah! Botanicals get me every time.

Casa Quickie: Flower Votive Display

I love this idea from Martha Stewart for making a floral display out of your votives. Rather than simply using your votives as lighting, you can use them as tabletop decorations by tying the stem of your favorite flower to each votive with a bit of raffia, some ribbon, or even a rubber band.
By placing the votive holder on top of a small, water-filled saucer, you'll keep the flowers fresh as long your party lasts. If you're having a dinner party, you can take this tabletop décor idea a step further by using a fabric marker to write the name of each guest onto the ribbon you use to tie each flower, using each votive holder as a place card as well. Or, if you use a thick rubber band, you can simply write each name with ballpoint pen. Talk about Summer style.

Cool Idea: Petal-Filled Vase

I'm not a flower snob. Pick a couple of wildflowers from alongside the Interstate and toss them in a Starbucks Frappuccino cup, and I'll be just as happy as if you'd charged a floral masterpiece to your Black card. But I do appreciate a little innovation when it comes to flower arrangements. And sometimes, it's not thinking outside the box that brings about innovation, but rather, inside the vase. The Kartell Pantagruel Vase by Phillipe Starck ($198) was re-imagined here, filled to the brim with pink hydrangea, highlighting its feminine curves. This new genre of bouquet can be achieved with any flowering plant, dried or fresh, and works best with a clear glass vase with a nice shape. Try it with grasses for a more masculine arrangement.
