Since the breakout of the August wildfires north of Los Angeles, at least 53 buildings have been destroyed, and 4,300 people have been evacuated. As of this writing, more than 12,000 homes are under threat.
While some families have been reluctant to leave their homes, in the end, your home is just a house.

I love how utterly romantic this image is. It's straight out of a romantic foreign film. Practically, though, I'd worry about fire hazards associated with having candles within kicking distance.

As most of you probably know, California has been ravaged by fires this Summer. As I write this, one of my friends awaits evacuation notice at her Southern California home, and several others are keeping a close watch on fire patterns in their area. Fire scares me — it is erratic and unpredictable and frighteningly fast.

One fun aspect to Winter house parties is adding an outdoor element to the festivities. For instance, at a party we threw last weekend, we realized that most of the guests would probably want to spend some time outside. Given that the temperatures were dipping into the high 30s, though, we knew they'd also want to have some source of heat.
