Nice and New: Martha, Martha, Martha!

I love all things Martha. I love her magazine, her old magazine (RIP, Blueprint), her mind-boggling multitasking abilities, her droll conversational style, and, yes, those who model themselves as the antithesis of Martha (such as Not Martha). So, imagine my delight when I found out that there was going to be a new Martha Stewart show on the telly. However, this is Martha with a twist. Premiering next Tuesday on the Fine Living Network, Whatever, Martha features Stewart's daughter, Alexis, and friend Jennifer Koppelman Hutt poking gentle fun at the domestic diva.

Framed as something of a roast, cohosts Alexis Stewart and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt share their own ideas about Martha through television clips, commentary, and surprise guests. It premieres Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 9 p.m. on the Fine Living Network. Do you love Martha too much to stand watching the ribbing, or is this your idea of fun?

Coveted Crib: Chez Sheila Bridges

You may remember interior designer Sheila Bridges from our Designer Spotlight or from Domino and ELLE Decor, or her spot on the Fine Living network. Voted one of America's best designers, she can transform any space with a bold use of color and whimsical accents, while maintaining a traditional sensibility. She doesn't reserve these techniques solely for her clients though; her Harlem apartment is perhaps the best illustration of her knack for design. New York Social Diary not so recently had an interesting interview with Sheila and captured many wonderful images of her Harlem apartment. My favorite room by far has to be her study, which she had painted with quotes from her favorite books. But there are wonderful, creative touches and patterns everywhere, which refuse to let your eyes rest. Take a peek at this slideshow to see it, and be sure to read the interview. Source

Great Art Online: Yee-Haw Industries

Yee-Haw Industries was established by partners Kevin Bradley & Julie Belcher, who opened up shop from a back-40 barn in Corbin, Kentucky, with salvaged, antique equipment. Their vibrant, folk art, wood cut prints of country music's classic stars, such as Hank Williams, Sr. and Loretta Lynn, caught eyes and told stories. Soon, modern music acts, including Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and Southern Culture on the Skids began commissioning promotional posters and album art. In 1998, having outgrown the bluegrass barn, Yee-Haw moved to Knoxville, where they offer tours of the Yee-Haw studio in action and maintain a store to sell their wares.

Yee-Haw's work has been honored by selection to PRINT Magazine's Regional Design Annual for seven years running and has been reviewed and featured by The Washington Post, AIGA Journal, Fortune Small Business, Southern Living, Esquire, American Illustration 21, and was recently published in The Art of Modern Rock, the Poster Explosion. Yee-Haw has done fine illustration, as well as design and letterpress, for clients such as RRL-Ralph Lauren, The American Visionary Art Museum, MTV2, and the Cartoon Network. The studio has recently collaborated with the National Gallery of Art to design & produce a unique line of Dada merchandise, available exclusively at the National Gallery for the duration of the 2006 Dada exhibition.

Designer Spotlight: Sheila Bridges

Though she's an interior designer in name, Sheila Bridges' job description includes everything from hosting a show on the Fine Living network to appearing as a design pundit on "Oprah" to decorating the Harlem office space of Bill Clinton. And if an interior designer can achieve national fame, Bridges has done it. Since founding her own firm in 1994, she's been named America's Best Interior Designer by CNN and Time magazines.

What I like about Bridges' designs is her ability to use very traditional pieces in unexpected ways. A room by Bridges won't be too jarring for anyone with less-than-edgy tastes, but she's always likely to throw in a playful accent or an objet d'art that keeps formality to a minimum.
