Good pick! That bedding is very chic - much more sophisticated than any college bedding I ever had! Lucky for you, it wasn't hard for to me find. Nice and New: West Elm Mushroom Duvet Cover

I love the retro look of the West Elm Mushroom Duvet Cover ($89 for queen). They remind me a little of the wacky patterns you see in some Mad Men interiors, but with a bit of Marimekko flair thrown in for good measure. In a 300-count cotton sateen, they're both fun and comfy. May I suggest a Kartell Gnome to complete the effect?

I know how much you love Moroccan-themed décor. I was watching a Dateline special Sunday night featuring Taylor Swift, and they showed her Moroccan-themed bedroom. Do you know where she bought her comforter/duvet cover (or where I could get a similar one)? I've been dying to find a bedspread for a Moroccan bedroom.

Thanks for writing in! I found this photo of Taylor Swift's bedroom at People.com, which I assume is what you're referring to. Her duvet actually looks to be a coverlet made from Indian saris.

If that's what you're looking for, I'd first check local import stores. You can also find similar items on eBay. I'm partial to the Pottery Barn Kantha Patchwork Quilt & Sham, but it looks like the quilt is no longer available.

What I actually suggest you do is make your coverlet yourself. Choosing fabric remnants yourself will allow you to cue the palette to your tastes and existing furnishings. Another CasaSugar reader recently wrote in asking how she could get started making her own quilt from sari fabric, and I gave her some tips in this post. So be sure to check that out!

Ask Casa: Dexter Duvet Cover

Dear Casa,
I am trying to track down a duvet cover/comforter that I saw on an episode of Dexter. I have exhausted the web and searched everywhere, but nothing. The duvet is a turquoise/teal blue with a gold iridescence to it. I would like to find it or something similar. You can see the duvet cover around minute 1:55 in this YouTube video. If you have any advice on what I can do to locate a similar duvet, I would really appreciate it.

Good find! That duvet cover has a sharp teal color, and it pairs well with her orange sheets. I wasn't able to track down the exact same item, but this teal Blissliving Max Peacock Comforter ($235–275) is a close second. This one is actually ribbed which gives it a really luxurious texture, and the underside is chocolate brown which gives you some versatility if you want to switch things up. The satin fabric also has an iridescence to it, which sounds like what you were looking for.

You can also just head to a fabric retailer like Calico Corners to find the exact silk fabric you want. Then, have a duvet cover made or make it yourself; it's a fairly simple sewing project.

If that's not for you, here are a few other options:

Desire/Acquire: Bold Floral Duvet Cover

I've long been a fan of the Amenity Cove Duvet Cover ($330-395). Its big, bold design makes a definitive statement in the boudoir, and its fresh, modern color scheme is a breath of fresh air. However, its price tag makes this duvet cover a bit more of a commitment than I'm willing to make, especially since I love to switch up the look of my linens.

Ask Casa: Tone Down My Bedding

Hi Casa,
I would really love your help/advice on something. I have a Tommy Hilfiger comforter that I bought freshman year for college; the comforter color is similar to this one shown here. At the time, I was really into bright colors, especially hot pink.
Now, I am entering my junior year at school, about to be 21 and, well, the hot pink seems a little immature to me. Also, I prefer something a little more mellow for my dorm because it essentially doubles as a work space and resting place. I don't really want to spend a lot of money on new bedding because I'll be abroad next semester so the bedding wouldn't be for very long. Do you have any ideas on how I can subdue the color with other things (i.e. room accessories, pillows, frames)? Or any sites that I can look into getting something new in an inexpensive price range?

Thanks for thinking of me! I completely understand where you're coming from. There are a lot of options for you. But let me start off by saying that bright pink needn't look immature — and this is coming from someone who works at Sugar, the pinkest company of all!

A simple way to tone down a bold comforter is to fold a blanket or matelassé in a light color at the base of your bed and then use light and large (try euro size) pillow shams. I'm sure your parents have a basic white blanket somewhere for you. This will cover up some of the bright color, and make it more of an accent color. Then, you'll want to draw the focus away from the bed. Hang a large and bold piece of artwork, a tapestry, or poster above your bed on the wall; this will draw eyes up and away from the bed itself. Or, if your dorm allows it, bring in or DIY a headboard to create a focal point.

Since your dorm room doubles as a work space and a resting place, another great option for you is to curtain off the bed. West Elm sells a Steel Cable System that works as a curtain rod, which you can use to create a canopy effect over your bed. This will also separate your bed from your desk, so it won't be so tempting to hop back into bed when you should be studying for that English final.

Throw some colorful, patterned textiles onto your bed, such as a suzani, à la Selina Lake's Bazaar Style, and your hot pink bedspread will be tame in comparison. Why not check out some local thrift shops, flea markets, and your linen closet at home to see what patterned linens you can bring into the mix?

Probably the simplest solution to your concern, though, is to get a duvet cover! There are plenty of affordable duvet covers out there in the sale sections of some of my favorite retailers, as well as at stores like Ikea, Garnet Hill, and The Company Store. Or, you could stitch a simple duvet cover together with two flat sheets. Here are a few choices for you:

Nice and New: Vintage Bird Duvet Cover and Shams

Ok, so I thought I was ready to admit that birds were for the, well, birds. But darn it, this new Vintage Bird Duvet Cover and Shams ($19 to $159) has me singing a different tune. I love the simple black line drawing-like print of the birds and trees on the creamy 230-thread count combed cotton fabric. The pattern is available in shams, duvet cover, and comforter, which comes in a choice of down or down-alternative batting. I am definitely tempted to put these on my wedding registry. There's only one thing holding me back: When the dog hops on the bed, I guarantee she'll leave her gray/black/brown fur on this in plain sight. Ah, a conundrum!

Nice and New: Iron Gate Crewel Duvet Cover

One small change you can make in your bedroom that will have a vast visual effect - as evidenced by Zoë's before and after -is to introduce a new duvet cover. The Williams-Sonoma Home Iron Gate Crewel Duvet Cover ($348-$448) may not be the most affordable one, but its white-on-white or black-on-white pattern is certainly versatile enough for many color schemes. While its name suggests it's inspired by the interlacing design of antique iron gates, I'm also getting a Van Cleef and Arpels vibe from it, as well as a resemblance to Dwellstudio's Sketch textiles, both of which I love. The graphic quality would also suit both modern and traditional homes. Would this duvet work in your chambre?
