How-To: Refresh Tired Drawers and Dressers

With the approach of Spring, I'm rethinking ways to add some fresh accents to my home without spending a lot of money. One project that I've been interested in tackling is refreshing my dresser. I also have some old drawers left over from a trashed dresser that wasn't worth saving, and I need something to do with them as well. Are you in a similar situation? Casa Quickie: Sticky Drawers

Aging isn't an easy thing to do. For antiques, the phrase "things get better with age" is nearly always true when it comes to aesthetics and market value. But sometimes they do need a little love to get their groove back. When it comes to a chest or bureau with sticky drawers that no longer slide open and closed easily, did you know that the antiaging remedy is as simple and household-ready as a candlestick? Just pull out the chest drawers and grab a piece of wax or an old candlestick that's down to its last legs. Rub the wax along the tracks where the grooves of the drawers will run. Now, put each drawer back, and they should slide in smoothly.

Before and After: Salvaged Shelves Get an Upgrade

While some people might take a look at these drawers and decide they were destined for the dump, Monica of Craftynest had a different vision. The drawers, which were salvaged from a 1940s kitchen, were found on the website Freecycle. Monica knew she wanted to transform them into something stellar, and originally thought they'd make great storage drawers by simply adding some wheels to the bottom. Ultimately, though, she decided to go in another direction.

She turned them into a modular bookcase! Monica writes, "I tried stacking them vertically instead. You could also hang these drawers on the wall as individual shadowboxes. You could even add shelves inside each drawer."

Love It or Hate It? Chest of Drawers

Dutch born Tejo Remy's 'You Can't Lay Down Your Memory' Chest of Drawers, designed in 1991, is part of the MOMA's permanent collection. It's a group of found drawers strapped together to create a single cluster of drawers, made of metal, paper, plastic, burlap, contact paper, and paint. You can purchase a unique, made-to-order set, one of only 200, for $51,616 at Retro Modern. What do you think?

Before and After: Bye Bye Aneboda

This Ikea Aneboda Chest ($49.99) is pretty basic and nondescript, and its transparent drawer fronts are borderline, if not definitely, tacky. But, its three drawers are the perfect size for my knick-knacks. I pulled off a transformation of the chest that's more my style in under 10 minutes, with only three supplies. I cut decorative paper to size to cover up the Polypropylene drawer fronts, and glued it with a few strokes of rubber cement. Fini! I was considering replacing the drawer handles with some cute knobs, but I think this will do fine.

Crave Worthy: Black and White Lacquered Bone Chest

If I hadn't drilled it in with my recent Steal of the Day that I'm gaga for hexagons, you should know that I'm irrationally enthusiastic about this Paul Marra Black and White Lacquered Bone Chest ($5,200). Add my love of anything high gloss, the unusual skeleton-key fastening, and the trendy black and white elegance of this chest, and you can safely say that I've been swept off my feet. I guess I'm hooked on honeycomb.

In nearly every home, a junk drawer is growing, luring refugee "stuff" to find solace there. It's unavoidable really; there are always some odds and ends with no place to go, and the junk drawer is the only haven for them. The trick is clear that junk drawer out frequently, and organize what's left into categories and containers. Regardless of whether it's organized, I know you have one. Admit it. Steal of the Day: West Elm Wide Two-Drawer File Cabinet

The key to a stylish home office is finding furniture that doesn't look too severe. The only thing severe about this West Elm Wide Two-Drawer File Cabinet (below left) is that it's severely stylish and severely on sale: $200, reduced from $430. It comes in darker chocolate finish or lighter acorn, and I love the way the "handles" at the top and bottom of the drawers look like a design element. It's a compact 34 inches wide and holds letter or legal-size files.

Casa Quickie: Junk Drawer Diaries

Since it's Small Changes month, I'm all about giving attention to the tiniest nooks and crannies in your home, which may have been overlooked. One of these zones that's infamous for clutter and things without a designated storage space of their own is the junk drawer. You've told me before what's in your junk drawer, so I know you've got one! Here are my few steps that'll help you organize that mess.

Pour it out, onto a table or the floor.
Toss the trash. If you don't use it, lose it.
Anything out of place? Store it where it belongs.
Fill your drawer small containers (tins, boxes) to separate your things.
Sort your junk into the separate containers by function (paperclips in one box, batteries in another).
Repeat as necessary!

Cool Idea: Drawer Planters

I talk often about various forms of recycling and upcycling, and I've seen plenty of ingenious ideas for reusing what might seem useless. But sometimes you needn't change a thing about a household item to give it a new purpose. Sometimes all it takes is a little dirt. That's surely the case with these old drawers that were effortlessly transformed into planters with some soil and seeds. If you want to try this on your own, though, I'd recommend drilling holes in the drawer bases for drainage. And to think: I spent all that time building my own garden box! Ohh, hindsight.
