Assisted Living: Incorporating a Bold New Antique

We just purchased this new antique cabinet for our dining room. The problem is it's not really our style and really doesn't match any of the sleek, clean lined, contemporary furniture we have in our house. For some reason we fell in love with it in the antique store and decided to put it in our dining room, but I need help incorporating it with our other furniture. Are there other accents or decorations I could add to the room to make our contemporary dining room table and chairs mesh better with this new piece?

First of all, LynniePop, I would definitely recommend painting your dining room walls. This will instantly give the space a more cohesive look. Mixing styles and eras of furniture is a smart move; it gives the room depth and shows that you have cultivated your own personal aesthetic.

Do You Have an Open Plan Kitchen?

I grew up in a house with an open plan kitchen, where the cooking and the dining took place in the same room. I loved it! Everyone tends to hover in the kitchen at parties and every day anyway, so it makes sense to have them in one place. Of course, it's less formal, but let's face it: my name might as well be Casual Cathy. Do you have one?

Open House: What's Your Dining Style?

A beautiful formal dining room is like an Oscars dress of interiors: you're in love with it, but you'll only wear it once. If I had the space, I would certainly give my formal dining room the works: chandeliers, fine china, expensive chairs, and a table with room for eight (or 12!). But in my day-to-day life, it's a bit impractical to set the table for every meal. Let's face it, there's nothing I love more than eating takeout in front of the latest Netflix delivery. And for most meals I cook, a casual kitchen table will do when just two of us are eating. How about you? Tell me what your dining style is and how it has affected your decorating choices. If life were different, would you want a formal dining space, or would you still prefer more casual dining?

I am excited to wrap up the public spaces in my home and now have the chance to focus on my dining room. I am personally very inspired by mid-century inspired furniture and décor. I like to mix true vintage and new pieces together. I currently have a walnut Danish modern dining set that I adore. Unfortunately the chairs are very uncomfortable so I am going to sell them and keep my table. Here are just a few pieces and ideas that I am planning to incorporate into the space which opens to my front living room. I can't wait to finish this space!

Lovely Little Vignettes: Our New Dining Room

My husband and I recently purchased this 1950 Center Hall Colonial in October just before my husband deployed overseas for the year. We finished our formal dining room in time to have our family over for the holidays. The walls were originally a Big Bird Yellow with heavy brown drapes and oversized chandelier in the center of the room. I'm still working on the living room, which I'll post soon.

Assisted Living: Help Me Find Fabric For Dining Chairs

CasaSugar Community member Lauren posted in the Assisted Living group looking for help finding fabric for her dining chairs:

My husband and I have started on a pretty large refinishing project! It is an old dining room table with six chairs that belonged to a friend of the family's grandmother! It is a beautiful set but it definitely needs a lot of work! So we are in the process of removing both the stain and varnish on all of the chairs and the table. I want to stain the table with a really dark almost black stain to update the old style. Along with staining, I need to recover the seats. I wanted something bright and most likely green but I am open to other colors. Does anyone know of a good place to look online for fabrics? Here are a couple of the fabrics I was thinking about!

Love It or Hate It? Hot Pink Chandelier

I spotted this dining room photo in Tria Giovan's portfolio, and was immediately struck by the high-intensity contrasts in color in the room. From the bright yellow and orange chairs to the hot pink and lime green chandelier, it definitely comes on strong. But is it too boldly colorful for your tastes?

My Dining Room Is Finally Coming Together

We have been working on decorating our dining room pretty much since we moved into our house three years ago. Last year we finally got a dining room table and chairs and then recently we added curtains and a wreath and then this weekend our china hutch finally arrived! Still to come (hopefully) is a rug and some more art for the walls, but at this rate it will probably be another year. At least it's closer than ever!
