Cool Idea: Modern Doilies

Kristan Cunningham, interior designer and Design on a Dime host, recently remodeled her rental apartment on a tiny budget. One of the ideas she shared with the LA Times was using her grandmother's antique doilies as decoration in her bedroom. This is yet another example of the growing modern doily motif trend I wrote about back in November. I love the way the simple, black backgrounds showcase the doilies and add a bit of feminine flair to the otherwise masculine, black-and-white bedroom.

Scenes From New York's Design on a Dime Event

If you're a New Yorker, you may have been lucky enough to catch the Design on a Dime event that finished off this weekend. Over 40 of the world's top interior designers, including Elizabeth Bauer, John Bartlett, David Cafiero (Chloe Sevigny's designer), James Huniford and more, created room vignettes for the event, and furnishings were sold off to visitors at a 40 to 60 percent discount. The proceeds benefit Housing Works, the nation’s largest grassroots AIDS service organization, but another perk is that each vignette is an inspiration for those of us decorating our own homes. Sale Alert: Design on a Dime Ends Today in NYC

The home was designed by Conrad Buff of Buff & Hensman Architects as his last personal residence. It features a kitchen and dining area that flow directly into the two-story living room, opening up to a wide-sheltered patio and grounds with garden pathways and spa, as well as an upstairs master suite, guest bedroom and bath, lower-level media room with adjacent bath, and home office with a separate entrance. And, of course, Kristan's design style and skill shine through in the lively, modern furnishings. I personally don't gravitate towards home that look very modern from the exterior, but I'm loving the interior of the house. It feels very open, and not too sterile because she's warmed it up with shag carpets and great light fixtures. Check out a video tour of the digs here.

This Just In: Maggie Gyllenhaal Makes Time For Housing Charity

Between shooting films, spending time with her beautiful daughter Ramona, and looking lovely at the The Met's Costume Institute Gala, you'd think that Maggie Gyllenhaal would have her hands full. However, she still has time to give back to the city of New York: Maggie's teamed up with Real Simple and Design on a Dime for the fourth-annual Design on a Dime charity event, which will benefit Housing Works in New York.

Taking place from Thursday, May 8, through Saturday, May 10, at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City, the Design on a Dime Benefit will feature designers such as Casa favorites Charlotte Moss and Jamie Drake

The Thursday kickoff VIP event will include exclusive preview shopping, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. For tickets go to the Housing Works website. The Friday and Saturday sale is free and open to the public.

All proceeds from Design on a Dime go to Housing Works, New York City’s largest community-based AIDS organization. Founded in 1990, Housing Works provides housing, medical care, job training, and other lifesaving services to homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.
