Su Casa: Decorating For the Holidays

Su Casa member Caffeepants responded to my Su Casa Challenge and posted some pretty pictures from her holiday-decorated home. I love the sparkling orbs on her trees, and all of the twinkly lights on her deck are reminding me that I need to get some outdoor decorations on my porch as well.

Açai berries may be the latest power fruit to hit Whole Foods shelves, but that's no reason not to delight in the adorable puckered tops and bulbous shapes of last season’s trendy grocery, the pomegranate. If you’re celebrating Hanukkah this year, you can enjoy the "pom" when you pick up the Michael Aram Pomegranate Menorah ($150), a stunning bronze luminary with a leafy, branch base. You can also check out Aram's collection of other pomegranate-festooned items. Didn’t you hear? “Deck the halls with boughs of pommy,” is the latest power ditty.

Su Casa: A Christmas Mantel Shelf

Since we're not all fortunate enough to live in our dream houses, we have to be innovative with what we've got. Su Casa member JenLovesGreen certainly subscribes to this train of thought. As much as she would love to keep cozy by a warm fireplace in her own living room, her current digs are lacking in that department. So, she's made the best of things this holiday season by bringing in an alternative: a shelf. "Although my substitute mantel doesn't frame a cozy fireplace," she says, "it does allow me to decorate for the holidays." She's festively dressed her faux mantel with an arrangement of elegant white pillar candles, cranberry garland, and two Christmas stockings to boot. I think this is a great alternative for all CasaSugar readers who want to hang stockings, but don't have a fireplace mantel - it's a brilliant solution. I can almost see those logs burning; can't you?

Su Casa: Easy Paper Decorations and a White Tree

Since I'm starting to deck the house for the holidays, I'm looking for inspiration and new ideas for decorating my home. Luckily, I found some great inspiration on Su Casa from MellyMels.

Mellymels writes,

Since it's a recession and I am an artist I decided to make a lot of decorations from paper. I also got my very first artificial tree, since I have allergies and my boyfriend has asthma (plus the dog likes to eat tree needles).

I printed reversed letters on card stock and then cut them out so when they were flipped you couldn't see the printed lines showing me where to cut. Then I just used double stick tape to hang them them up. This is my first time living with a fireplace so I was determined to spruce it up.

Holidays are on my mind lately, and I love seeing all the creative ways others decorate their homes at this time of year. I'm always looking for inspiration to try new things in my own home. We each have our own traditions for the holidays and the seasons, and personalizing our homes is often a large part of those rituals. For example, TeamSugar member Peggasus decided to add some holiday cheer to this Marlin (which she caught herself - it took her two hours to reel it in) by topping its fin with a Santa hat. Nice and New: John Robshaw Christmas Stocking

Not to be a brat or anything, but my family has been using the same gigantic Christmas stockings for more than 20 years, always filled to the brim with lots of goodies. So, at 12" x 21", the John Robshaw Block Printed Holly Stockings ($70 each) won't do for me, but they're certainly stylish enough to hang on the mantel simply as décor in my home. Available with a mistletoe, candy cane, or peppermint pattern, they're quite festive and would also make a wonderful gift for anyone you know who's building up their collection of holiday décor. What do you think?

Home Away From Home: A Skate-Inspired Hotel Suite

Skateboard label Etnies is rolling into the world of hospitality. The California-based brand has designed a skate-inspired hotel suite in Laguna Beach's Casa del Camino. But you won't find any Etnies logo monogrammed sheets here. "We didn’t want to make it look like a trade show," said VP of marketing Don Brown. "We focused more on the culture of skateboarding, taking the movement, curves and shapes and injecting that into the design."

Elements include wheel tracks on the ceiling, a mirror framed with skateboard wheels, mounted skateboards for guests to use, and "Go Sk8" artwork in the bathroom. My favorite piece is the God Father Lounge Chair, a leather chair and ottoman inspired by Eames's iconic Lounge Chair, made of pieces which remarkably resemble a skateboard deck. Do You Have an Ocean View?

I just spent a lazy family weekend on Whidbey Island, off the coast of Washington State, and while the weather was a little overcast, the view was still fabulous. I definitely wouldn't mind indulging in these ocean views year-round.
