I love damask patterns, whether they're woven into a beautiful throw or papered onto a wall. They're often feature flowers, fruit, or animal life, but have you ever heard of a damask pattern that's composed of flowers? Well, that's exactly, what Manchester, England, artist Jo Vickers did when she created a flower installation in a damask pattern. Displayed in Manchester's Albert Square as part of the Manchester in Bloom festival, over 60,000 flowers were used to create the pattern. Breathtaking!

Cool Idea: A Damask Makeover

Melissa from Sugar City Journal recently made a small change to her staircase that carries a huge visual impact. She scanned a damask fabric into the computer, then digitally enhanced it in PhotoShop. After printing the pattern on paper, she glued the sheets together, laminated them, and then used Modgepodge to glue them to her stairs.

Melissa says, "If you look closely when walking up these stairs, you might see a few familiar faces hidden amidst the damask. A simple way to bring a smile, as I walk up and down these stairs, one hundred times a day."

Great work! I love the surprising pattern on the staircase; I'm almost wishing I had one to walk up every day, just so I could enhance it as Melissa did.

The Nicolette Brunklaus Large Delight Shade ($797) is both of those things, and oh so much more. It's also evidence of the growing flocking trend, as well as playful, modern, and elegant. I'd love to see one hanging over a large, tufted leather restaurant booth or a kitchen island, or even suspended in a stark, white bathroom. If my recent roundup has you itching for some flocking, I'm here to ease your pain. The Company Store Elia Rug ($69-$382) has the look of rich damask flocking, without the heavy price tag. You can get yours in blue, chocolate, green, or natural, but I'd suggest steering clear of the cotton-candy blue, so you don't overdo it. I think the open, spacious feel of this rug gives it a contemporary look that offsets the Baroque roots of the design quite well. How would you build a room around this rug?

Ask Casa: A Cheap Quilt Alternative?

Hi Casa,

I was hoping you could help me with my dilemma. I fell in love with this quilt from Urban Outfitters. I'm a college student, and in a month I'm moving into a house that I'm renting myself, so money is really tight and I was hoping to find something inexpensive. I found this amazing quilt for $79, but by the time I really decided to get it, they ran out of it in twin size. My room is painted a light teal color, and I love the paisley pattern of this quilt. Do you know of any similar quilts or duvets that are out there, or at least a store where I could find similar style quilts without breaking the bank?

This past weekend, New Orleans-based wallpaper company Flavor Paper debuted its Spring 2009 line at BKLYN Designs featuring fresh new designs from Brooklyn-based Dan Funderburgh. While the designs vary widely in subject matter and look, they're all eyecatching and provocative, especially Sharp Descent ($150 per roll), which features a deluge of knives, syringes, and scissors raining down one's wall. I'm more of a fan of the Fruits of Design ($150 per roll, shown here), which provides a modern twist on classic damask.

I've had 18th century design on my mind lately . . . I'm really feeling damask fabrics, carving wood, and gilding as of late. I guess I'd like a little Marie Antoinette-esque design in my life; but not too much, I'm a modern gal! The Neiman Marcus Carved Loveseat ($2,999) has all of those elements that I adore, that make me feel like I'm strolling the pavilions of Versailles. But I think it could be easily integrated into my modern home, perhaps beside a slick white side table or some mirrored furniture. Even if it doesn't make its way into my digs (long shot), I'll still "Ooooh" and "Ahhh" over it. Will you?
