Good, Better, Best: Cool Cuckoo Clocks

One of my best friends had a cuckoo clock growing up, and I just thought it was the coolest thing ever. But as an adult, I've never been into the whole German-kitsch look, so I was never particularly interested in bringing a cuckoo clock into my life.

But right now, it seems, everyone wants to put a cute, modern spin on the iconic design. Combining surprising colors and materials with the traditional cuckoo clock silhouette, these products would add a playful touch to your decor. Here are a few finds to suit three difference price points.

Good: Who'd have thought that the discount-store behemoth could create such a stylish clock? This Wal-Mart Retro Cuckoo Clock ($14.88) has lacy detailing that echoes older designs, but it doesn't have a cuckoo sound.

Better: Offering more traditional design cues, the Urban Outfitters Starlight Cuckoo Clock ($48) has a modern silver gleam and features images of pine cones, woodland creatures, and a pop-out bird.

Best: The Diamantini Domeniconi Cuckoo Clock by Pascal Tarabay ($278) is the smartest of the bunch. You can opt for a soft, subtle cuckoo or a louder tone, and the bird quiets down at night using a light sensor. It's available in orange, white, black, stainless steel, and light blue.

I'm not quite sure if I'm sick of the cuckoo clock trend or not, but I must admit I like the Klaus Rosburg Cuckoo Clock ($95). While there's been a proliferation of die-cut mirrors, something about the mirrored silhouette shape of a cuckoo clock against this exposed brick wall caught my eye. The ornate, three-dimensional design of traditional cuckoo clocks gives them a lively, kitschy feel, but seeing one in silhouette form made me appreciate them in a whole new way. This clock may not have a (sometimes obnoxious) bird popping out of its façade on the hour, but its interesting curves and
shapes are enough to make me chirp. What do you think? Are you a fan?

Love It or Hate It? Cucuruku Clock

Presented in Milan last year at the international furniture show, the Cucuruku Clock ($350) is a restrained interpretation of the old German classic. Constructed from wenge painted wood, this is a perfect cuckoo clock for the minimalist modern home. But would you put it in yours?

While I'm definitely a peace-loving gal, I can't deny the influence that war and weaponry have had on home decor as of late. From gun vases to bullet planters, it seems as if product designers have a different definition of homeland security than our national leaders. While this may be a commentary on our society's obsession with weapons, I'm still not necessarily willing to stock my home with guns - be they real or made of ceramic.

Still, some of the designs are too provocative to ignore. Take the Diamantini & Domeniconi Cuckoo Bunker Wall Clock ($720). Instead of a woodland scene, this cuckoo (actually, it looks more like a dove to me, which only adds to the appeal) is hunkered down in a bunker. Assembled from 111 small green bricks, the cuckoo/dove sits in the middle of this bunker, and wears a helmet to protect itself from the battle at hand.
