Coveted Crib: Farmhouse Fantastic

The interior of this Vermont farmhouse, recently featured in House Beautiful, comes courtesy of the talents of designer Susan Tully. The look exudes comfort and simplicity, thanks to the muted color palette and restrained use of patterns.

This sense of restraint and tranquility was inspired by the Shaker tradition of this area of Vermont, and details like the cherrywood pencil-post bed and millwork reflect this heritage. More American traditional accents are found in the rooms' upholstery fabrics, antiques, and rugs. I love (and covet) the Aga range in the kitchen, along with this room's 300-year-old floor beams, which were rescued from an old barn and whitewashed.

Says designer Tully:

"It was very important to me to do something that related to the location. The idea was to build a new house that had the feeling of a Shaker-style farmhouse, but with all the 21st-century amenities. I incorporated a lot of architectural salvage, including old barn beams and heart-pine floor planks. Other floors, the foundation, all the chimneys, and some of the fireplaces are in a gray granite that's indigenous to Vermont. So the house does have a primitive-but not too primitive-Shaker feel. Rustic yet sophisticated, I would say."

Coveted Crib: Marianne Boesky's Contemporary Traditionalist Mix

Marianne Boesky is the owner of a self-titled gallery in downtown New York, she's a new wife and mother, and she lives in a dare-I-say "sick" apartment over her internationally acclaimed shop. The Marianne Boesky Gallery supports the work of contemporary international artists of all media, including Sarah Sze, Takashi Murakami, and Yoshitomo Nara—in other words, no fox hunting landscapes in sight.
Her husband, Liam Culman, an equity sales trader, who previously lived in a minimalist loft by Richard Gluckman, wanted to go for a traditional aesthetic this time. The couple commissioned Deborah Berke, an architect known for her elegant but minimalist modern brand of design, to find a way to balance the work of Boesky's emerging designer pals with traditional furniture pieces, architectural moldings, and dark wood floors. The result is a stunning achievement, and an inspiration for those of us with a significant other to please.

Coveted Crib: Slaughterhouse Fine

A former slaughterhouse in Ulricehamn, Sweden, was transformed into this fabulous coveted crib. Outfitted with furniture and accessories from around the world, the space feels much more metropolitan than you'd expect from a rural Swedish home. An extensive collection of artwork is mixed with both vintage and modern furniture. Antique Corinthian columns mingle with an Arne Jacobsen Swan chair, worn wood surfaces with plush velvet, and IKEA with Philippe Starck, creating endless serendipitous juxtapositions. Coveted Crib: An Art Collector's Curated Minimalism

When you are an art collector, you don't need an interior designer or even color on your walls to have a painfully coveted crib. In the town of Lille in northern France, a French art collector turned a former textile factory into a 557-square-foot loft with a patio. He kept the mill's original crisscross shaped trusses and painted everything white, including beautiful features like cast-iron columns. Meanwhile, the floor is simple gray cement, creating a neutral background for his collection. Paintings and sculptures dominate the loft, with the exception of one wall near the entrance which was painted a spectacular orange, cued to the color of an Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair in the room. Coveted Crib: Arty in Cologne

You'd expect nothing less than inspired décor from an artist, designer, and art director, and that's exactly what you see in Mike Meiré's early 20th-century Cologne apartment. On top of beautiful architectural bones, Meiré has used his German home as a canvas to showcase his contemporary art collection, including work by Rita Ackermann, Lutz Fezer, and Damien Hirst. Pop art brings in color throughout, and iconic designs by famous names (Jasper Morrison, Eero Saarinen, Piero Lissoni) give the place a sense of idolism. But the place isn't a museum either, this coveted crib has an eclectic spirit and a heart, with exotic pieces collected on worldly trips, family photos, and everyday items (like ladder) used in peculiar, artistic ways. Coveted Crib: A Sleek Hamptons Home

When it comes to coveted cribs, beach views, sleek modern architecture, and poolside lounging are definitely enviable features. This gorgeous vacation home in East Hampton comes complete with three different water sources: a pond, a solar-heated pool, and views to nearby Barrier Beach.

The home, which was recently renovated, admirably merges the structure with the surrounding landscape. The house is low-slung and nestled into the hillside. Guest rooms are located on one wing that is separated from the main space by a courtyard, which looks out onto the solar-heated pool. The pond is landscaped with native grasses that are drought tolerant, and the home's beautiful nature views are easily seen through its huge expanses of glass doors and windows.

The house takes advantage of passive solar principles, with its northern side occupied by very few window, which reduces heating needs. A 10 KW solar panel array offsets the home's energy needs, and a ground source heat pump provides efficient heating and cooling.

Coveted Crib: A Fire Station Home

When a UK couple (a musician and a cook) wanted to make their home a reflection of their creative spirit, they turned to London architect Simon Conder, whose work has included turning barn buildings and granaries into sleek, modern homes. The project: to create a sleek, inspirational home behind the abandoned West London Holland Park fire station.

The architectural solution for the space involved creating a rooftop conservatory in the center of the building plan. This way, the light from the roof could filter down into the rest of the house's floors, permeating all levels with sunlight. A further sense of lightness was added by utilizing glass for flooring. Best of all, the dramatic rooftop conservatory retracts in fair weather, creating a roof garden. With sleek, minimalist design, clever storage solutions such as the home's three-story storage wall, and gorgeous stone staircases, this home is definitely a coveted crib, and a great example of how modern architecture can naturally, and beautifully, fit in with structures from previous centuries.

Coveted Crib: An Unconventional French Cottage

From the exterior, Gary and Samantha Peterson's Chamonix cottage, which was featured in Marie Claire Maison, is resolutely a traditional Alpine house. But push open its front door, and you'll be confronted with cheerfully decorated interiors bursting with acid colors, massively proportioned spaces, and walls dressed in white, throwing you into a ski vacation universe turned upside down. Despite the fact that all conventions have been thrown to the wind, and your average cottage kitsch is notably missing, the Petersons' cottage is a welcoming mountain escape, and certainly what I'd call a coveted crib.
