Cool Idea: Everything in One Hue

Melanie, of the fabulous Etsy shop Plum Cushion, lives in a seriously stylish 1941 Cape Cod in Seattle. The bones of her home are nice, but it's her cool palette and ability to modernize vintage pieces that really make it hip. One of my favorite elements was how she painted her Rococo sconces and mirror and her Chinoiserie console table to match the blue of her walls. Obviously, each piece has an ornate shape that could really stand out if painted in a contrasting color. But they're all so shapely, it would be too busy and competitive if that were the case. Painted to match the walls, her accessories pop and make you give the quaint corner a second look.

Desire/Acquire: Dessouschic Console Table by Noé Duchaufour Lawrence

I'm absolutely in love with the shape of the Dessouschic Console Table ($11,334) by Noé Duchaufour Lawrence, and you also know how much I love white furniture. But unfortunately it is hilariously out of my price range. Lucky for me, there's a much, much, much more affordable alternative. And it's equally chic. Want to see it? Then read more.

The Brocade Home Silhouette Console Table ($499) has a very similar shape, with slightly less detail, and comes in the same glossy white finish. For a table that's only used as a landing strip or a decorative piece, it definitely fits the bill.

Steal of the Day: Pier 1 Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table

I often forget about Pier 1 because it doesn't do e-commerce, and there isn't a store very close to me. But that's not to say the retailer doesn't have a great selection - and great bargains. This Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table ($79.98, reduced from $149.95) is completely chic and versatile, and such a great deal. It has antiqued brass legs and antique mirrors with reverse etching details. Were you to buy an original in an antique store, it could cost you $900, but why put yourself through that pain? Accent tables such as this aren't something you need to invest in; you should spend your big bucks on larger pieces like sofas, dining tables, and armoires. Got a Pier 1 near you? What are you waiting for?

Steal of the Day: JCPenney Collin Table

I've been looking for a classic, affordable console table with nice curves to lighten the mood of some of my sleeker modern pieces, and I think I've found it. Aside from its partial engineered wood construction (also made of pine), I really can't go wrong with the JCPenney Collin Table ($149, reduced from $229). Its turned wood legs are timeless, its x-base is elegant and personable, and its black finish is certainly versatile. What's not to love? Well, I might switch out the knobs for something with a little more kick, but other than that, I'm sold!

Definition: Demi-Lune

We can thank the French for much of our decor vocabulary. The word "demi-lune" means "half moon" en Français. It's used to described the hemisphere-shaped tables you've come to know as "console" tables, which are designed to stand against a wall. Of course, consoles come in all shapes and sizes; a demi-lune is just a particular breed. Its feminine curves give it a more formal look, but really it's suitable for any home. And, since its tabletop has a smaller surface area than a rectangular console table, it's ideal for small spaces. Do you have a demi-lune?

Steal of the Day: West Elm Chunky Console Table

After-Christmas deals don't last long, but a good piece of furniture will. The West Elm Chunky Console Table ($150) is a stylish modern console that's versatile enough to be used as a landing strip, a console, a buffet, or even a bar table with a set of stools, depending on your needs. Go basic brown with an acorn finish, or infuse a little rouge into your home with a cinnabar finish. I love the substantial scale of this piece; it's a bold focal point, but its clean lines keep it unfussy. This simple style won't go out of style anytime soon.

Good, Better, Best: Branch/Root Console Tables

I've been noticing these branch-base console tables at a few of my usual design haunts, and thought perhaps it's a growing a trend. I'm really loving the organic, textural quality they bring to a room, especially considering that many homes are leaning towards a more pared-down, modern look these days.

Good: Shown above is the Ballard Designs Faux Bois Demilune Table ($699, reduced from $1,495). I certainly love its half-moon shape and how the table top looks like a slice off of an old tree stump. But as the name suggests, the base is actually made from a concrete-like resin over a sturdy metal frame, not genuine branches. That's a turn off to me, although the price is more affordable than others.

Better (middle): The base of the Jayson Home & Garden Grapevine Console ($2,295) is made from natural grapevine: one point for nature! I like the juxtaposition of the glass top with its organic details. I also like its breadth; it could really be a focal point in a foyer.

Best (left): My favorite of the three is the Dransfield & Ross Root Console ($2,799). Like the Jayson console, it's crafted from natural tree roots, giving it an organic appeal, but it brushes off an overly rustic look with its handpainted white lacquer finish. The modern white finish makes the outdoorsy vibe of the table more appropriate for a contemporary home.

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Potrero White Console Table

I'm always on the lookout for a classic console table to serve as a landing strip for my everyday x, y, and z, on which I can also display decorative objects and books, etc., on a shelf below. I'm thinking that the Pottery Barn Potrero White Console Table ($249- $329, reduced from $359- $479) might just be the one. Crafted of aluminum, with an x-base that I love, it's sturdy, classic, and stylish, not to mention functional. It's available with a glass or stone top — I'm not sure which I prefer. It looks great here used on a porch as a Summer buffet, but would also be at home indoors. What do you think? What's not to like, right?
