I spotted this dining room photo in Tria Giovan's portfolio, and was immediately struck by the high-intensity contrasts in color in the room. From the bright yellow and orange chairs to the hot pink and lime green chandelier, it definitely comes on strong. But is it too boldly colorful for your tastes?

Color Theory: Mix Pink and Red

When you're talking fashion, there are a lot of rules about color. No white after Labor Day. Black and brown clash. A lot of these rules have fallen by the wayside now that people dress a bit more bohemian, but for interior design, they've never really applied. You can be more liberal with the colors in your home. There's no doubt about it that red and pink clash, but if you mix them purposefully, it works!

I love the color pairing of these photos from stylist Olga Naiman. The solid red corner headboard and solid magenta bedspread on the left were very clearly designed to be used together, and it looks chic in a bold way. On the right, patterned and textured pinks and reds were mixed in a very playful manner. Since it's a low, lounge-y space, there's no need for those formal rules to apply. You'll see in both images that neutral colors were used on the walls and furniture; this tames the palette a bit. Mixing these colors also gives them a new association. On their own, pink is girly, while red is seductive. Together, they are lighthearted and fun. Try this at home!

Etsy Finds: Gray and Yellow Artwork

Since I wrote my slideshows on how to decorate with gray and with yellow, I've been on a major gray and yellow kick, and I'm considering using those colors in a palette for one of my rooms. So as a start, I thought I'd see what gray and yellow artwork is out there. Obviously having more than two colors in a painting or a print will give it more depth and visual interest, so it's not limited to just these hues! Let's take a look.

Summer Style: A Lake Getaway in Surprising Colors

I doubt that I would ever think of painting a cottage these two colors. Still, the contrast between the Mediterranean blue and rusty brick red is certainly eye-catching, and there's something so innocent and playful about the combination. In fact, it almost seems as if odd, surprising colors should be de rigueur for Summer getaways. It seems to me as if the colors alone demand that one relax, sit back, and enjoy the space. After all, there's nothing serious about a Summer getaway. It should be all about enjoyment!

Casa Quickie: Step Into Color

If you're in love with your white walls, but still want to add a hint of color to your life, take inspiration from this home. The stairs were painted an unexpectedly bright color, adding an infusion of freshness to the space. With otherwise neutral choices for the floors and walls, the staircase really stands out. It probably comes in handy for little ones learning to concentrate on climbing stairs, too, don't you think?
