Found It! Trompe-l'œil Grandfather Clock

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of photographer Joanna Henderson and I'm absolutely in love with it. Not only is the light beautiful, but the space couldn't be any more understatedly elegant. The trompe-l'œil grandfather clock is simply great for that white wall, and it pairs perfectly with those bentwood chairs. The little floor lantern gives this antiquey corner a bit of Eastern flair, and the horse print is so sweetly styled. But back to the clock - it looks familiar, doesn't it? You don't see grandfather clocks much these days. When you've got an iPhone or BlackBerry, who needs a clock or a watch? But they are beautiful, and I'm soothed by the quiet tick-tock of their hands. If you've got the room for one, a grandfather clock can be a charming aesthetic addition to your home. Otherwise, you might consider something like the Ikea Pendel, which doubles as storage. I adore this shabby chic one, photographed by James Merrell. Tell me, do you own one?

Flipping through the latest issue of Living Etc, I was awestruck by a cool grandfather clock. The quirky and modern design has built-in shelving to hold your housewares - perfect for kitchenware or books.

"Must. Have," I thought. Then I realized it was from Ikea. Could the world be any sweeter? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, it could be, because the design doesn't seem to be available in the States yet. Until then, I'll just have to settle with these cool clocks. But, if you live in the UK, you can buy it for £129.

Nice and New: The Twice Twice Clock

The Twice Twice Clock ($150) would look right at home in a gender-neutral bedroom. Its walnut finish and rectangular shape are definitely masculine, but its neon pop of color, courtesy of the clock hands, imbues the clock with a fun, feminine modernity. Designed by Jonas Damon, who seems to have an obsession with clocks, as well as simple, elegant shapes, you couldn't go wrong with adding any of Damon's designs to your home.

Car-quality paint in white, pink, gold, or gray gives it a contemporary, industrial look. As much as I think it's a pretty little clock, I'd prefer not to spend over 100 smackers on the thing. You can DIY your own Rose Clock with a ceiling medallion ($24.26), and choose from dozens of designs, and a set of clock hands ($7.95). $32.21, total! The medallion comes with a hole through the center, so no drilling is necessary. Just screw together and hang!

DIY: Literary Clock

If you're stumped for a unique holiday gift, you could bring some timeliness to a friend's life with this book clock ($19.95) from Etsy seller Recycleeh. Or, if you're feeling handy, you might consider personalizing your friend or family member's favorite book by turning it into a clock.

To make this cool clock, simply choose a hardcover book, without a busy cover, so that the clock numbers are legible. The book also needs to be large enough to fit the clock hands. Aside from the book, you'll need a clock hands set (available at Michael's or other craft store), a ruler, a protractor, pen, paper, scissors, and a drill. The stem of the clock hands set varies between 1/4 and 3/4 inch, so be sure it fits the thickness of your book.

Here's how to do it, according to Instructables:

Use your ruler to find the center of your book. Then mark it with a pen.
If you like, spray paint your clock hands in a different color.
Drill a hole where you marked the center of the book. Your clock hand set should suggest what size drill bit to use, so follow its instructions.
According the instructions, install your clock hands and parts into the hole you drilled.
Using the longest clock hand as a guide for the radius, draw a circle onto a piece of paper with your pen using the protractor.
Cut out the circle, and center the template over the center of the book (where the clock hands are).
Adhere the clock numbers onto the book, a bit beyond the edge of the circle template, evenly all the way around. Begin with numbers 3, 6, 9, and 12 and then fill in the other numbers. Fini!

Good, Better, Best: Modern Desk Clocks

Clocks have long been a fixture in homes worldwide, with not only a time-keeping function but also an aesthetic one. But as we've become drawn to our computers, cell phones, PDAs, and electronic kitchen appliances, we've found ourselves with little need for a free-standing clock, and these handsome things have fallen by the wayside. Personally, I like to put my gadgets to rest and out of my bedroom so I can have uninterrupted sleep, but I'll gladly grandfather in a good-looking desk clock. Lately, I've been looking for a handsome modern desk clock with a white face. So, I thought I'd round up a few that I'm thinking about. First (Good), the Jonas Damon Twice Once Clock ($80) is a modern reinterpretation of the two-sided railway station clock. I like its minimal face, and the punch of color its orange hands bring. Better: The Riki Desk Clock ($120) is a re-release of a 1970 Riki Watanabe design. I love that its large font makes it easy to read and its cute round shape, but I'm not sold on the pumpkin color.

Best:: The Amadana Alarm Clock ($118) is quite handsome with its simple face, quadrilateral shape, and lack of needless trimmings. It's also an alarm clock with slow, Euro lounge-esque sounds (listen to them here), giving you a natural, less-startling awakening than your average alarm clock. And, it features an LED light that shines on its laser-processed clock face with the press of a button, but doesn't look so "electric" when it sits untouched. Beautiful.
