This Just In: Mr. Big Makes a Commitment

According to Real Estalker, Chris Noth, a.k.a. Sex and the City's Mr. Big, and his longtime girlfriend, actress Tara Wilson (and mother of their son Orion Christopher Noth), purchased an 1,854-square-foot, 3-bedroom, 2-bath Joseph Eichler-esque modernist home in Sherman Oaks, CA for $1.445 million in August 2007. I'm sure the anticipation of his paycheck from the Sex and the City movie made it easy for Noth to fork over a big million or so for the house, and a three bedroom is also the perfect size for his family of three. I personally love the place, and am eager to see what direction he takes the décor. I hope he doesn't go for a midcentury antigarden . Until then, I'll just have to drool over Noth when I see him on screen at our SATC movie screening party tonight, and I can also look forward to his pairing in a romcom with Renee Zellweger.

Decorating Ideas to Steal From The Good Wife

I've been enjoying Julianna Margulies's new series The Good Wife. Margulies stars as Alicia Florrick, a wife and mother who heads back to the work force after her husband (played by Chris Noth), the Cook County state attorney, is jailed for a sex and political corruption scandal. Alicia's new home, which she shares with her two children, shows a great mix of classic style that's updated with some more modern touches. Adventures in Craigslisting (Chapter 3)

If you've been reading my other Adventures in Craigslisting posts, you'll know that I had arranged to buy a beautiful gem-in-the-rough table from Chris Howard. Chris, who specializes in furniture restoration, agreed to strip the table. I would then refinish it.

The day before I was supposed to pick up the table, I got a frantic email from Chris. He wrote,

Some jerk just stole the table!!!! My neighbor witnessed this guy on a bike with a trailer load it up and leave! Cops were called, took the report, and just left. I have furniture outside there all the time and nothing ever went missing. So sorry!!! Going to drive around and look for it now.

Chris wrote me a second email shortly thereafter, saying

That was a unique table. I still can’t believe it. I’ve had $5000 items outside and nothing has ever happened. After the police left, I went to five antique stores to see if anyone tried selling it, but no luck. I got a lesson on the stolen furniture trade and who buys it. I’ll keep my eyes open. I might visit the Berkeley Flea market on Saturday to see if it’s there, and I also have the SHELL station [by his house] on the look out for the bicycle with yellow trailer. But I suspect it’s gone. Crime is getting bad around here.

Chris posted a "MISSING" ad on Craigslist, but in the meanwhile he wanted to give me my money back. I thought that seemed like a terribly unfair solution, given that he'd put so much work into the table. At the very least I wanted to use some of the money towards another piece of furniture that Chris owned.

Steal of the Day: French Country Bed

If you want to add some old-fashioned romance to your boudoir, look no further than the French Country Bed (queen on sale for $539, regularly $899). While it may look a little bit like Brocade Home (though of course, Brocade claims that there's nothing country about their French furniture), the price is significantly cheaper. From the Chris Madden For JCPenney Home Collection, this whitewashed bed features woven cane and is constructed from solid wood and molded resin.
I think that the whitewashed, ornate frame would look great when paired with a more streamlined bedroom - maybe some steel gray painted walls and unfussy linens. How would you integrate this bed into your boudoir?

Chatting With Artist Yvette Molina

Remember last week's post about artist Yvette Molina? Her gorgeous botanical paintings seemed to be a hit with all of you, so I thought you might like to get a little more information on this talented lady. Yvette was kind enough to sit down and answer a few of our questions about her art and influences.

CasaSugar: What neighborhood of Oakland, Ca, do you live in?
Yvette Molina: I live in the Grand Lake neighborhood near the Oakland Rose Garden.

CasaSugar: Do you feel that this area’s botanical and gardening tradition affects the way you paint its plants?
Yvette Molina: I grew up in the midwest where everyone had cement patios surrounded by lawns and hedges for a yard. No one I knew had a garden with flowers or any large variety of plants let alone a vegetable patch. Coming to live in the Bay Area as an adult was a complete inspiration. Having a garden to tend in an environment that allows for so many planting possibilities became an absolute infatuation that is very strong in me today.

CasaSugar: What other parts of California inspire your art?
Yvette Molina: I am always moved by the redwoods and by the fog. The Bay Area fog always seems to seep into my paintings.

CasaSugar: How did you stumble upon painting on aluminum?
Yvette Molina: I owe my introduction to aluminum to a wonderful Oakland artist and good friend named Chris Loomis. At his suggestion five years ago I began to work on aluminum and I have worked on nothing else since then. I love the reflective quality and the sharpness of it. Before I begin to paint, the raw aluminum looks like a slice of the sky resting on my easel.
