Before and After: Broyhill Brasilia Dressers

I have a slight obsession with the Brasilia by Broyhill line from the 1960s. Both our dining room and bedroom are outfitted with furniture from this line. We were missing nightstands for the bedroom though and I searched obsessively until I found them. At an auction. A state away. Of course the nightstands did not come by themselves, they were part of a lot that included a double dresser with two mirrors and a taller five-drawer chest.

The big question was what to do with these two pieces. Part of me was tempted to sell them, but I knew that the chest wasn't in the best shape - it had a chip in the one drawer as you can see. Also I really didn't want them to fall into the hands of a dealer who would then turn around and jack up the price. We are expecting our 2nd child and hoping to have a shared nursery and were in a storage crunch, of course all of the nursery furniture is white. The thought of painting these pieces was borderline blasphemy. I googled "white walnut furniture" just to see what came up and found a very cool dresser/changing table going for $1600.

With expensive inspiration as my rationale I stripped, primed, sanded and painted the drawers of the dresser and chest.

Do You Use a Chest For a Coffee Table?

I love the idea of using a chest instead of a simple table in the living room. Not only does it add an unexpected element to the room, but it also provides great, hidden storage for games, blankets, CDs, or DVDs. This particular chest (which I love - is that a checkers board pattern embedded in the top?) is from Lovely_1's new home, which you can tour here.

Guess Who Designed This Chest?

I recently watched Sex and the City: The Movie again (still love it!), and noticed this chest of drawers in the office of Carrie Bradshaw's editor at Vogue. The dresser was designed by a very influential American interior designer of the early-to-mid '20s. She wrote an inspiring, and quite popular, decorating book in 1939, called Decorating Is Fun! Can you name her?

Definition: Bombé

If you ever hear an interior designer shouting, "It's the bombé!" don't jump to conclusions. She might be referring to a cabinet. A bombé is a low wooden chest with a bulging façade and sides. Fittingly, "bombé" as it turns out, means "curved" in French. Most of these cabinets have drawers, often three, although some have doors like a sideboard. They're often used to store clothing in a bedroom or table linens in a dining room, and paired with a mirror placed above them.

Crave Worthy: The Conran Shop Napoleone Cabinet

Antiques are beautiful, but sometimes I can't resist a modern interpretation of an old classic, like the the Conran Shop Napoleone Cabinet ($4,950). Lacquered with glossy green, the timeless form of this seven-drawer chest takes on a lively and witty attitude. Sadly this cabinet is astronomically out of reach for me, but a girl can dream, can't she? If I were the proud owner of this royal French piece, I'd fill it with Hermes scarves, vintage leather gloves, buckets of baubles, and some extortionate lace. How about you?

Turn On or Turn Off: Exposed Chest Hair

Since I know you ladies find a man with a hairy chest sexy, I'd love to have your thoughts about gents that wear the exposed chest hair look. Personally, I think a couple of buttons undone and a little chest exposure done right can be a turn on, but on some guys, I’ve seen it look more than a little sleazy. So what do you think? Is the exposed chest hair look a turn on or a total turn off?

Crave Worthy: Casablanca Six Drawer Chest

If I had the dough, I'd buy the Cottage & Bungalow Casablanca Six Drawer Chest ($3,440) based on its name alone; you know I'm a fan of anything with Moroccan roots, and 1940s romances get me every time. But thanks to this chest's good looks, that wouldn't be necessary. Despite its hardware-less minimalism, it's stunning and truly eye-catching. I love its clean lines, plaque-like imprints, and unfussy, cerused oak. If the pennies added up in my bank account, I'd buy this beauty in heartbeat . . . and then write my own romance about it.

You Asked: How Do I Keep My Cleavage and Not the Pounds?

This question is great on so many levels and while I have never had the joy of being well-endowed, I do understand your concern completely. To see what I have to say on this matter

I wish I had better news for you but here is the truth: Just like you can't spot reduce areas on your body, you also can't spot save either. In other words, the body doesn't let you pick and choose which parts you lose the fat from. (If that were the case, my thighs and cleavage would be glorious.) In fact, where your body chooses to draw fat from for fuel generally depends on genetics. Try and look on the bright side; while you can't keep the pounds from leaving your chest, you can keep it looking toned by adding a few strength moves into your gym routine. I recommend moves that work your pecs such as push ups, planks, chest presses, and flies.

Steal of the Day: Crate and Barrel Taisho Chest

If I weren't saving every extra penny for my wedding, I'd be spending it on this beautiful, understated Taisho Chest (on sale for $499, originally $999). This eco chic apothecary cabinet is made from reclaimed elm wood, which was recovered from old homes, government buildings, and other unused buildings in China's Shandong province. The wood is cleaned and dried, and then crafted into these beautiful chests. Although it appears to have nine small drawers, in reality the six-panel door opens to reveal two adjustable shelves, with three square drawers on the right side. This piece would fit in perfectly in my minimalist bedroom; how would it look in your home?
