Give Back While You Shop With CB2's "Can Do" Drive

Last year, CB2 had tremendous success with its "can do" drive, helping to stock food banks in the neighborhoods close to its stores. This year, the "can do" drive is back. From today through Nov. 25, bring five nonperishable items into the store and receive 15 percent off your purchases for that day. All food collected will be directly contributed to a local food bank.

My local CB2 will be contributing to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. You can check here to see which charity your local CB2 will benefit during the drive. And meanwhile, make sure to head out to a store soon, with your five cans in hand. Not only will you feel good about providing food for needy families during the holiday season, but you'll also feel darn good about that discount. See below for some of my favorite CB2 items that I'll be shopping for when I bring in my nonperishables this week.

As part of the annual "Les Sapins de Noël des Créateurs" charity auction to benefit the Sol En Si charity organization, which helps children and families living with AIDS in Paris, last week the fashion elite gathered to bid on 44 Christmas trees designed by some of the most prominent names in fashion.

Gift Guide: Gifting For Charity

In these strange economic times, it's even more important than ever to support nonprofits and charities that are working to preserve people's homes and healthy living spaces. With that in mind, I've chosen some of my favorite charities that work with gardens or housing issues. I can't emphasize the importance of these programs enough. Some, like Habitat For Humanity, you've probably heard of, while others, like the Ruth Bancroft Garden, are more locally based, but still do very important work.

Even if we're all running around like crazy trying to craft or buy gifts for our friends and family members, I think that it's important to stand back for a moment and reflect on the important work that these organizations are doing. After all, our communities are an extension of our homes, and keeping our communities healthy is just as important as maintaining our individual homes. If you have the need to find a meaningful gift for a loved one, consider giving in his or her name to one of these charities. It will make a world of difference! This Just In: Vipp and Helena Christensen Team Up For Charity

Danish design company VIPP and supermodel Helena Christensen have teamed up to hold a charity auction of Vipp pedal bins that have been given a fashionable makeover by fashion, design, art, and entertainment leaders. The bins have been made over by the likes of Bono, Michael Stipe, Mario Batali, Michael Bastian, Simon Doonan, Frederic Fekkai, Karim Rashid, Jason Miller, Todd Oldham, Alice Temperley, Mena Suvari, and more, and will be sold in a silent auction benefiting the Food Bank For New York City and Chernobyl Children’s Project International. An installation of the bins will be on display for public viewing and pre-bidding at The Conran Shop in New York through Thursday, Sept. 18, when an evening auction event will be held at the Winston Wächter Fine Art Gallery. Registry Roundup: Giving Back

Since my guy and I are pretty set up as far as our home is concerned, we didn't want to register for a lot of stuff. That's why we registered for a hodgepodge of art and home items on MyRegistry. We also wanted to give guests the option of donating to a charity in our names, instead of buying goods we don't need.

If, like us, you have a well-established home without a lot of need for specific registry items, you might also want to consider giving guests the option of donating to a charity. You can do so in a number of ways, but perhaps the most effective method is by linking to the charities on your wedding website. To give you some ideas, I've linked to some home, garden, and environmental charities in the widget below. Take a look and see if anything inspires you!

Nice and New: Breast Cancer Awareness Décor Products

Every October, retailers around the world sell products designed to raise money and awareness for breast cancer charities. Décor products certainly fall into this category, too. The problem is that while seeing a plethora of pink ribbon-branded items in retailers left and right may catch your eye, most products don't necessarily inspire you to decorate your homes with these items year-round. So I was excited to see some chic pink products that I'd certainly purchase regardless of the campaign.

First, Williams-Sonoma Home will donate $10 from the purchase of every Pink Solid Cashmere Throw ($298) this month to support breast cancer research and patient treatment. You can choose between a light or hot pink 50-by-65-inch fringed throw.

This Just In: Gossip Girl and Jennifer Hudson Team Up For Charity Auction

The cast of Gossip Girl and Jennifer Hudson have teamed up with Deeply Madly Living to benefit the V-Day Foundation (an antifemale violence organization) and the Children’s Defense Fund, according a 5W PR rep. The starlets have each personally autographed a base of the Deeply Madly Living Celebrity Lamp ($1,600), a lamp with a shade made of 40 pairs of mirrored, incognito aviator shades resting on a shiny, linear stand, creating a sparkling paparazzi effect when turned on. Auction of two of these signed fixtures kicked off yesterday on eBay, with bidding starting at $800 and proceeds going to the charities.

The design debuted at last week's International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York. It was originally constructed of upcycled aviator sunglasses but unfortunately, now is being produced entirely from new sunglasses, thanks to the demands of mass production. Tell me, would you bid on this celeb-signed lamp if you had the dough?

This Just In: Maggie Gyllenhaal Makes Time For Housing Charity

Between shooting films, spending time with her beautiful daughter Ramona, and looking lovely at the The Met's Costume Institute Gala, you'd think that Maggie Gyllenhaal would have her hands full. However, she still has time to give back to the city of New York: Maggie's teamed up with Real Simple and Design on a Dime for the fourth-annual Design on a Dime charity event, which will benefit Housing Works in New York.

Taking place from Thursday, May 8, through Saturday, May 10, at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City, the Design on a Dime Benefit will feature designers such as Casa favorites Charlotte Moss and Jamie Drake

The Thursday kickoff VIP event will include exclusive preview shopping, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. For tickets go to the Housing Works website. The Friday and Saturday sale is free and open to the public.

All proceeds from Design on a Dime go to Housing Works, New York City’s largest community-based AIDS organization. Founded in 1990, Housing Works provides housing, medical care, job training, and other lifesaving services to homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.

Philippe Starck's Louis Ghost Chair Gets a Makeover

Philippe Starck has no doubt had an influence on many areas of the design world, but he will never escape his Louis Ghost Chair. The 2002 design pared down the opulent Louis XVI chair and is as relevant, contemporary, and stylish today as it was seven years ago. Starck did try to reimagine it in a child size, the Lou Lou Ghost Chair, but Louis reigns supreme. The folks at London design shop Lifestyle Bazaar are taking one more shot at reinventing the thing in hopes of making it cutting-edge once again, rather than the design staple it has become.

They've asked nine designers and artists from various disciplines (street art, tattoo art, taxidermy, sculpture, furniture design, conceptual salvage, product design, and interior design) to customize nine Louis Ghost chairs for the London Design Festival in September. The chairs will be auctioned off to benefit Children With Aids Charity. One chair will be decked with colorful cakes, sweets, and meringues to be photographed by Rosie Day, and for guests of the exhibit to actually snack on. I bet Starck never imagined his precious set would one day become a buffet.
