DIY: Cereal Box Magazine Holder

With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. To learn how to make one of your own, read more.

I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.

Here are the steps:

Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).

Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.

If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.

Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.

Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.

Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.

Set your magazines in the box. Fini!

View 5 Photos ›

Ask Casa: Plastic Lace Basket

Hi Casasugar,
I was recently browsing your site (very nice!) and saw something I hope you can help me get more info on. I saw a DIY on making your own cereal box magazine holder, and there's a pierced plastic lace basket that I love. If you have or can get any information on this, you'd be my best friend forever. Or, how about I would be so very much grateful to you? Thanks in advance!
Your new fan,
Sweetonu

To hear my response, read more.

Hi sweetonu,
Good question; I love my lace basket! The basket is the Design House Stockholm Carrie Shopping Basket. I recently wrote about how the basket is selling at the Container Store for $29.99. It's also available as a bicycle basket with hardware. Hope that helps!
Midday Muse: I'm an Island (Fan)

Growing up, I would always sit on our high stools at the kitchen island and watch my mother cook dinner as I did my homework. It was basically the only way for me to spend time with her alone at night, and it was also how I learned to cook. Sometimes, my sister would practice piano in the room, or spread her books out on the dining table to study. In the mornings, we'd all hop on the stools and eat cereal together as my mom made sandwiches on the other side. We had an open-plan living space (a kitchen and casual dining room combined), and it worked for us; I can't imagine growing up any other way. But, some chefs prefer the kitchen to themselves, far from where their family actually dines, and others simply prefer the privacy of a separate kitchen. Where do you fall?
Nice and New: Anthropologie Fruiteria Lamp

The Anthropologie Fruiteria Lamp ($228 ) is kind of like the love child of your favorite recent home trend and Fruit Loops. While I never was a fan of the sugary cereal, I always had a thing for Toucan Sam and certainly can't shy away from those trendy lamps. So, I had to share this one, which cheerfully recalls citrus shapes. I don't know what it is, but I've recently been so attracted to colorful statement lamps and Fruiteria is no exception. If you prefer to be boring, you can get this lamp with clear glass balls instead — but, at the very least, pick up a patterned lampshade to perk it up.

Casa Quickie: Clothes Pins as Bag Clips

Rarely do I actually use clothes pins to hang clothes, but they're great for keeping bags closed - chip bags, cereal bags, you name it. Plus, they're ridiculously cheap: You can get a bag of 50 for less than $4.

Meanwhile, these fancy plastic bag clips from KitchenAid cost $7.99 for a four-pack. Why pay money for a special plastic bag clip when a wooden clothes pin works just as well?
