Do You Have a Ceiling Rose?

A ceiling rose is a round, ornamental decorative element affixed to the ceiling from which a chandelier or pendant is suspended. They're common in historical Victorian and Edwardian homes (especially in the UK), but they can easily be added to new homes. And so long as your home isn't super modern, they look elegant and relevant with many styles of design. Do you have one?

Reinventing an old classic, the Victorian ceiling medallion, the Mr Kaliski Rose Clock ($111, plus shipping from Britain) is quite the feminine and modern timepiece. Car-quality paint in white, pink, gold, or gray gives it a contemporary, industrial look. As much as I think it's a pretty little clock, I'd prefer not to spend over 100 smackers on the thing. You can DIY your own Rose Clock with a ceiling medallion ($24.26), and choose from dozens of designs, and a set of clock hands ($7.95). $32.21, total! The medallion comes with a hole through the center, so no drilling is necessary. Just screw together and hang!

How-To: Add a Medallion to Your Chandelier

If you want to class up your chandelier, consider adding a medallion to it. I've already showed you how to turn medallions into wall art, and alerted you to a new medallion light. If neither of these ideas strike your fancy, then maybe a ceiling medallion in its traditional placement is for you.

Locate ceiling framing and mark attachment locations on casting.
Pre-drill and countersink at attachment points.
Apply construction adhesive to the casting. While holding it firmly in place, attach the casting to the structural framing.
Screw attaching casting to structural framing.
Fill the screw holes with plaster. After the plaster has dried, sand it thoroughly until it is smooth.
Fill in any irregularities along ceiling with paintable caulk.
Prime and paint the medallion to match the ceiling.
Enjoy your newly ornate ceiling!

DIY: Ceiling Medallions as Wall Art

Since I was recently fawning over that ceiling medallion light, I couldn't help but stop in my tracks when I came across these ceiling medallions used as wall art. Do It Yourself offered up this creative idea in its collection of quick home projects. The lightweight urethane medallions were simply painted in subtly varying shades of yellow and easily mounted on the wall of this living room. The medallions are affordable, around $20 to $30, so it's quite an attainable way to bring "art" into your home. Another thought? Pick up a medallion with a circular opening in the center, and have a glass cutter make you a round mirror to size, and you'll have an ornate mirror at a fractional price.

Cool Idea: Ceiling Medallion Light

Switzerland-based product design consultancy Life Goods designed the Ceiling Light, which mimics the shape of a traditional ceiling medallion. I've always loved ornate ceiling medallions, so it's refreshing to see the design take on a different function. The design doesn't seem to be in production, but I'll be the first to get my hands on the clever luminary if it ever is. There aren't too many good-looking ceiling lights out there, and there are thousands of rental apartments ridden with eyesore ceiling lights, so I'd love to see this sold at an affordable price point. It's also just a great alternative to a chandelier; it may not dangle down from the ceiling with crystal stones but it's still a glamorous piece. What do you think?

Sandra Bullock and Jesse James Buy a Historic New Orleans Victorian

From Angelina and Brad Pitt to Nicolas Cage, New Orleans is becoming a popular place for celebs to settle, the latest transfers being Sandra Bullock and Jesse James. The pair quietly snatched up a historic Victorian home in New Orleans's Garden District for $2.25 million back in June. The 6,615-square-foot, five-bedroom, 4.5-bath home, known as the Koch-Mays house, was built sometime between 1860 and 1870. It retains many original Victorian design details, including ornately carved marble mantels, carved columns, large plaster medallions, shadow molding, and beautiful ornamental cast ironwork on its exterior. It's no surprise Bullock looked for historical details when doing her real estate shopping: the French Southern bistro she owns and designed in Austin, Bess Bistro, is in a historic building with tin ceilings and hand-painted floors. And although Austin won't be a far trip for the couple, they're guaranteed to find a good Creole shrimp meal in NOLA. See interior photos when you read more.

What You're Wanting Revealed: The Pickfair Mansion

When the LA Times recently ran pictures of the Pickfair Mansion, which was often frequented by luminaries such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Joan Crawford, Albert Einstein, and Amelia Earhart, I was particularly taken with the grandeur of the foyer. So, for this latest What You're Wanting, I asked how you'd decorate this glamorous entry.
I was really impressed by the look that Mrs W put together. She writes, "I love the mix of organic and ornate details in the foyer of the Pickfair Mansion. If I were to redecorate the entry hall, I would want to keep the pieces light and simple so as not to detract from the beautiful architectural details in the space. I would use a round table in the center of the hall to carry through the medallion on both the ceiling and floor and accent it with fresh flowers. I would use an armoire in a light color to add storage without bogging down the space. Two chairs on either side of a small table would give a place to remove shoes, etc. I would finish the design by adding details that echo the doors and ceiling like a few ornate frames and maybe a floral accent pillow."

I also loved the look that Iwillmarryunick put together. When putting together her look for this Pickfair Mansion room, she decided she'd go the route of "keeping it simple with lovely accent furniture." I completely applaud this. The room's ornate ceiling, doors, and gleaming floors are all ready the main attraction. It really needs little else besides some classic accent furniture pieces to complete the look.
